Is it a step to far?

I know a young Ottilie and yes, I believe it to be Too Much.

wheresthehamster · 26/12/2008 22:47

Yes. It's like utterly buttery. Don't do it

MrsDoylesMole · 26/12/2008 22:47

I like it but then my 2 have unusual names. If you like it why not?

NiceShoes · 26/12/2008 22:48

how do you pronounce?Oh-till-ee?

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 26/12/2008 22:48

it's very pretty - but she will spend her life spelling it

BoccaDellaNativita · 26/12/2008 22:54

It's extremely pretty but rather twee. Does that matter to you? There's worse things than being twee!

PestoHoHoHoMonster · 26/12/2008 22:55

I like it, but I like Aurelie better.

NiceShoes · 26/12/2008 22:57

No!sounds like the audiology clinic on 6th floor

RustyBear · 26/12/2008 23:05

I like it - I know an Ottilie (pron. Ott-ill-ee); she was at the junior school I work at, but she was known as Lottie until year 6 when she decided she wanted to be called Tillie instead - so you do have a choice of short versions.

sighkotika · 26/12/2008 23:36

that was my great aunts name, she was austrian, and a lovely woman

Jbck · 27/12/2008 00:09

I like it but DD2 has an unusual name so biased towards the out of the ordinary.

thumbElf · 27/12/2008 00:21

what wheresthehamster said - I knew one, instantly thought "otterly botterly" (seeing as how I didn't know how it was spelt at that time [duh]!)

MoominMymbleandMy · 27/12/2008 02:52

I first came across it in a John Wyndham short story. It was so unusual then that it stuck in my mind and I grew to love it.

Number 2 would have been Ottilie (pronounced Ott-ill-ee) but he was a boy.

Actually, I'm quite surprised at how frequently it seems to crop up on baby name threads. I am sure it is becoming more popular.

RustyBear · 27/12/2008 08:37

Moomin - that's where I first saw it too- it was Random Quest, wasn't it, the one where the guy gets into an alternate universe & falls in love with Ottilie Harshom and then tries to find her in this universe, but when he does find her, her name's Belinda. I love that story-did you ever see the film with Joan Collins?

gloomysue · 27/12/2008 09:17

gorgeous name, I know 2 Ottilies.

NorktasticNinja · 27/12/2008 11:05

Hmmm, a rather more positive reaction than I'd expected TBH!

I'm not in the UK (and very unlikely to live there again) so thankfully Utterly Butterly isn't an issue! I've not read the John Wyndham short story, I'll have to look out for that...

I knew an Ottilie who was shortened to Tilly. She had a little sister called Floriana (known, of course, as Florrie). I thought the names were a little overly-cute but for unusual names I thought they were a lot nicer than some I've heard.

PheasantPlucker · 27/12/2008 11:16

I love it, but what do I know about anything?!

NorktasticNinja · 27/12/2008 11:19

DD is Isabella and, yes, I know it's awfully popular in the UK ATM, but luckily it isn't here. Anyway, I'm not convinced the two names really go together, but, I'm pleased to be able to keep it on my list for a while

I actually really wanted Saskia for if DC2's a girl but DP is really not keen - apparently it's too 'common' in this country I have to take his word for it as I refuse to mention any name options to RL people and I still haven't found a decent `Dutch forum...

Ottoline is nicer, and not quite so twee.

NorktasticNinja · 27/12/2008 11:20

Ottoline - mmmmm, maybe maybe not. Will mull it over...

I had a Dutch friend too who called her son Indigo (slight non-sequiteur I guess, since we are discussing girl names ) - not sure if that's a "known" Dutch name but I thought it was rather nice! She wanted something that would work in Holland and in Britain.

NorktasticNinja · 27/12/2008 11:31

lol I have an English friend who called her DD Indigo! It's not a name I've ever come across here, it's not really may sort of thing anyway TBH.

CrushWithEyeliner · 27/12/2008 11:32

I'm sorry but I think that is the worst name I have ever come accross

othersideofchannel · 27/12/2008 11:36

I like it but find it sounds much nicer in German - pronounced Ott-eel-ye.
