Harriet... Too many of them?

Have a 10 day old daughter at home - still without a name! I'm a dad by the way, so hope I'm allowed on here. Both the wife and I have shortlists just there's not the same names on either. I like old school names like Charlotte, Violet and Harriet. Violet has been ruled out (sadly as I love it), maybe I can persuade the good lady to have Charlotte or Harriet. Middle name will be Suzanne after the wife's mum (dec'd).

I like Harriet but is it becoming really popular? If you've got kids at school, are there Harriets in your son/daughter's classes/years? (Son is called Samuel Leonard - Sam)

Many thanks

Nick

Don't know any small Harriets but I love it. Though must admit it seems quite complicated with Suzanne.

Any suggestions from your wife? Would give us a feel for where the conflict is.

(This is a site for all parents, despite the name. Welcome...)

RandomStranger · 18/12/2008 23:41

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter

If you like Harriet then go for it

goodasgoldfrankincenceandmyrhh · 18/12/2008 23:44

I love the name Harriet.

WinkyWinkola · 18/12/2008 23:45

I don't know any Harriets.

I prefer Violet though. Much prettier.

pinsanon · 18/12/2008 23:48

Suzanne is non-negotiable (her mum was a truly lovely person so I'm happy to carry the name on)! The wife likes Amelie, Ella, Rose & Emily (among others). I actually quite like Emily, but it was suggested initially by the father-in-law which rules it out totally I'm afraid.

I would have Rosina (not Rose) at a push as it was my Grandma's middle name (she was amazing!), but the wife doesn't like it (fair enough as might be a bit olde).

Our son took a while to have a name, but at least we both agreed on a few and just had to narrow it down!

Cheers

Nick

congrats!
Harriet - I know one 5yo with it as a middle name, but I think it is getting popular
Amelie - defo getting popular just now
ditto Emily.

if not Violet, try Viola
Instead of Rosina, try Rosita; or Rosanna (won't work with Suzanne though, will it!)

If you like the older names, try Emmeline instead of Emily.

seeker · 18/12/2008 23:54

I know the names of over 2000 children through schools, youth groups and so on - there isn't a Harriet among them. 3 Charlottes, and one Hetty, but no Harriets.

There are 10 Emilys and 4 Ellas and 6 Roses in the 2000,I'm sorry to tell you!

I love Violet too!

Nancy66 · 19/12/2008 00:06

Violet would definitely be my favourite but I love Harriet too and i don't think there are too many.

charlotte is middle name material, I think.

TheOldestCat · 19/12/2008 00:06

Congratulations!

Harriet's a gorgeous name - there aren't any at DD's nursery, if that helps at all.

Along the Rosina line, what about Rosalind Suzanne?

pinsanon · 19/12/2008 00:09

Yeah Violet would be my dream name, but as the wife doesn't agree it's fair enough. She likes the actual name Violet, but not the abbreviated "Vi" and doesn't 'see' our daughter as a Violet. Maybe a(nother) bunch of flowers would help!

Still, Violet aside I like Harriet and Charlotte. Possibly prefer Hattie to Lottie as abbreviations but there's just something about Harriet that feels right. Bizarrely it wasn't a name I'd even considered before she was born.

Wife initially wasn't a fan, but is considering it - which is progress.

I know a couple of Violets, neither of whom ever get abbreviated to Vi. So I don't think that's really a problem.

Don't know any small Harriets, but I am a university lecturer, and have been overrun with them at work for several years now - maybe the name's popularity was exhausted 20 years ago though?

happymerrychristmas · 19/12/2008 09:54

I wouldn't think Violet would ever be abbreviated - it's short enough. Lovely name!

There is 1 Harriet in my daughters Year 2 class of 18.

annasmami · 19/12/2008 11:39

I know a couple of Harriets. I find the name ok, but not particularly 'feminine' (always reminds me of Harry). I would prefer Violet or Charlotte.

Parsleypants · 19/12/2008 11:42

Congratulations Nick and dw!

I love Harriet. There are none in ds's school that I know of and definitely none in the school I teach in. Ds is the male equivalent of Harriet! Lovely lovely name.

FDTLuckyMumma · 19/12/2008 11:44

Check on
www.statistics.gov.uk/specials/babiesnames_girls.asp and look at pattern from last five years.
I think Harriet gorgeous name.

MamaG · 19/12/2008 11:46

I like Harriet, none in my dCs school

FIMBOingaroundtheChristmasTree · 19/12/2008 11:47

I work in a playgroup and we have one Harriet this year, never had one before. She is known though as Hattie.

I like it and also Hester.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 19/12/2008 13:57

Not enough Harriets IMO. What do you think of Marianne?

pinsanon · 19/12/2008 14:40

We've looked at so many baby name websites and statistics that we've almost given up! Perhaps we'll wait until she's old enough to choose her own! I was an advocate for not discussing names before a decision was made but as we've not decided yet (and thought we would have) I thought I'd ask for outside opinions. One of my best mates really doesn't like Harriet - but luckily it's not his baby to name! On the other hand, my wife liked Ella and told her Nan - who didn't - and now she's gone off it!

Cheers

Nurseries are full to bursting with Amelies, Emilys, Ellas, Ellies, Roses and Rosas at the moment. Last nursery I worked in had two Harriets too.

seeker · 19/12/2008 18:40

And anyway, does it actually matter if someone else in the school has the same name? Radical thought, I know......!

Sallyallyally · 19/12/2008 18:43

I've got a Harriet and she's a star! In her school (she is 9) there are 2 of them out of 150 pupils (nearly all girls)...so not so unusual it's weird, or so common it's everywhere!

pinsanon · 19/12/2008 21:28

To seeker. I don't mind there being other girls with the same name, but if there was 3 or 4 or 5 in the same class then a name I think as uncommon might be currently this year's hot name and I'd prefer to avoid it. My question was simply asking if there were many Harriets around as I like it (I see from another post you don't, but that doesn't matter).

Perhaps I should have asked for replies from younger/trendier mums only

I know a 40yr old Harriet and a 9 year old, abbreviated to Hattie which is soooo cute. As far as I know she's the only one at the school and nursery we use.

harpomarx · 19/12/2008 21:40

haven't come across any Harriets. I think Rosina is absolutely beautiful, fwiw . Much more striking and pretty than Harriet. Unusual without being weird. Not old-fashioned to my ears because I have never heard it before. And I like carrying unusual family names on, dd has her nan's name as a middle name and I reckon she is the only one in the country!
