Kerr?

We had decided to call ds2, due in 4 weeks, Kerr (dh still has this as his favourite) but I just want to be sure we are not choosing something people will sneer and laugh at when they hear his name.

Can mumsnet help us decide? Ds1 is Ross if that sways opinions any. We also like Greig or Sam as possible alternatives.

i like it!

i like ross, too.

but then again, i have a struan.

Andthentherewerethree · 16/12/2008 17:33

Not heard of Kerr before, similar to my sons name whcih is Kier so i like it!

NotanOtter · 16/12/2008 17:35

very nice goes well with Ross

DorrisMcWenceslas · 16/12/2008 17:35

Have taught a Kerr, always thought it was a lovely name
(Love Greig as well though!)

Scotia · 16/12/2008 17:35

Thanks Expat, yes I love your Struan too (how is he coming on btw) but our surname starts an ends in 'N' so we can't use it.

I know I shouldn't be having the wobbles about a name we both picked and liked weeks ago - maybe put it down to pg hormones

Sorry, cross posted with everyone else. Thanks so much, makes me feel much better and dh will be delighted because he loves the name. It was me who suggested it in the first place, so why I'm wavering now I have no idea, lol.

Struan's a wee stoater! He's 6 weeks and an entire stone! .

He's a long wee man, too.

DH calls him The Rugby Forward.

Boco · 16/12/2008 17:41

I also think it's a nice sounding name.
Are you tempted to have Pow! or Ching! as middle names?

Scotia · 16/12/2008 17:55

Lol Boco, might have to think about that - complete with exclamation mark too

Expat, lovely big boy My ds1 was a fast grower too but only after the first month (bf problems). He's not quite 5 yet but I have to buy him clothes for age 6. He's the youngest in his P1 class but one of the tallest with broad shoulders. Quite a surprise to me as my dds were all quite petite for their age.

cece · 16/12/2008 17:57

How do you say it?

Scotia · 16/12/2008 18:02

Pronounced just as it's spelled cece, if you can imagine it with a Scottish accent (long 'e')

OP posts:
cece · 16/12/2008 18:13

I thnk it would probably sound better with a Scottish accent, doesn't sound so good with my southern softy accent! Does it rhyme with err?

Well Kerr Smith is very yummy (in a clean cut sort of way).

moston · 16/12/2008 18:15

Sorry but I think I'd scoff and laugh. But purely due to ignorance on my part. I didn't know of Kerr as a name so thought it was made up (appreciate I'm wrong) but pronounce it like cur which means a low dog so yes I'd worry

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 18:29

Well, as you are in Scotland and it's for a Scottish boy, I'd go for it!

My DDs have Gaelic names and probably Engerlanders cannae say them properly, but that's why we live in the Western Heilands .

sorkycake · 16/12/2008 18:41

I don't know about Kerr, but Ross reminds me of the 80's, so I'd say a def no to that.

What does it mean, Kerr? Or is it simply a surname used as a forename?

Scotia · 16/12/2008 18:53

Kerr (hope that works)

Yes cece, it rhymes with 'err'.

It's too late to steer clear of Ross sorkycake as he wil be 5 next month Why does it remind you of the 80's?

poinsettydog · 16/12/2008 18:54

Kerr'sd ok in scotland but english people can't say it properly. DOn't know if that troubles you. Surnames as first names I'm not terribly keen on.

poinsettydog · 16/12/2008 18:56

ross is still popular in scotnad. prob depends where you live

JackieNoCribForABed · 16/12/2008 18:57

I like Kerr (partly because it reminds me of Avon from Blake's Seven whose first name was Kerr ).

SheSellsSanctury · 16/12/2008 22:46

Kerr is lovely. Was one of my names if DD had been a DS.

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 22:47

there are plenty of young ross's around this part of scotland.

but we've also got plenty of males sporting traditionally Scottish names as well.

wrinklytum · 16/12/2008 22:51

I like it especially since you are Scottish. It is unusual but in a "Good" way

(I also have Ross and think it is a great name)

SheSellsSanctury · 16/12/2008 22:58

I think the fact that your Scottish does help.

I have a Gregor and nephews Struan and Ramsay. I love them all and nobody in Scotland thought they were in the least bit strange but other friends found them different and as Moston said, made up.
