Sholto? Mungo?

Looking for a name for our impending DS. So far we like Alexander (Lex for short), Nairn, and Hector.
Sholto and Mungo have been suggested and I quite like them both. We DO live in Scotland and wonder whether we can get away with them? Or are they just too ?
(I have checked the national stats and there were 0 Mungos or Sholtos registered in Scotland in 2007).

Dh likes Lachlan and Fergus - I'm not so keen (because of Lachy as a nickname and Fergus = Fungus)!

Hector is still on the list.
We know a couple of Struans and lots of Euans so wouldn't go down the Struan route I don't think.

What about.......wait for it......my latest thought......

DOUGALL!

Or does it just = Dog from magic roundabout?

(I do know someone with a cute 6 yr old Dougall btw) - but he's the only one I know (of) and even then haven't seen her for years.

Dougall is always going to be magic roundabout to me which is a shame

ok what about

Duncan
Roan
Coran

Innes - I LOVE Innes

delightedoldbag34 · 15/12/2008 23:28

Oh, I just have too many friends with kids names I like.
I know a little Innes so wouldn't want to 'steal' that.
I also know a Roan - actually not keen on that though.
Coran - never heard of it but sounds like Corian which is kind of fake-granite worktop - not keen sorry.
I also know a few Duncans (but they are men). DH likes it but again I'm not too keen.

Sorry, hard to please aren't I?

So you think definitely no to Dougall then?
Waits hopefully for a reprise......

dougal wouldn't work for me personally sorry!

are you sure its a boy, I have brilliant girls names

delightedoldbag34 · 15/12/2008 23:40

Yes DEFINITELY a boy.
I had a girls name picked out (Annabel in case you were wondering). And I already have 2 girls so am good at choosing girls names. Am just rubbish (and unfamiliar) with all things 'blue'.....

OP posts:
dizzyjingles · 15/12/2008 23:42

Annabel is a lovely name

congratulations on your DS, we have 3 girls here, one of whom is Alexandra known as Lexie so if you DO go for Lex be warned they definately know their own minds and are very strong willed

reluctantincubator · 15/12/2008 23:43

I heart Dougall! That is a brilliant name. Cant believe I never thought about it for my own scottish boys names list - (not that it matters now). There's also Douglas, of course, but Dougall is much better.

LyraSilvertongue · 15/12/2008 23:43

Dougall is the stupid one in Father Ted.

MinkyBorage · 15/12/2008 23:52

LOVE Mungo

dizzyjingles · 15/12/2008 23:55

what about Heath?

dizzyjingles · 15/12/2008 23:56

of Hugo?!?!

I heart Hugo

delightedoldbag34 · 16/12/2008 08:22

Close family member called Hugo
I like it too, but couldn't use it. Boo.

dizzy congrats on your 3 girls. That's what my DH wanted. I think he's in shock that this one is a boy!
Alexandra (Lexie) is lovely BTW

dizzy I always liked Blair and had wanted to use it if we had a boy. But Tony Blair has put me off a bit. And there are a few around up here - it is quite possible there would be a couple in his class at school

I like Dougal, but I prfer Douglas and Donald. Dougal would really grwo on me though if I knew one. I can imagine I'd go from huh to loving it in a week.

What about Lorcan instead of Lachlan? Usually I prefer the scottish versions (Douglas over Dougal, Angus rahter than Aengus, Magnus over Manus etc etc etc) but Lorcan is much easier than Lachlan.

Do you like Roscoe any more than yesterday?

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 16/12/2008 16:16

Roary the racing car is on in the background and I'm thinking, Gregor(y) could Rory be a nickname for that or is it a leap too far?! I like Rory, but I worry that Americans (that mad bunch) are using it for girls!!

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 16/12/2008 16:17

ps, clementine was the cow from the magic roundabout, and that is not considered unusable at all. I know two Daisys.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 16/12/2008 16:18

I now love Dougal, so that didn't take very long at all!

delightedoldbag34 · 16/12/2008 22:31

I thought the pink cow was Ermintrude?
Now THAT'S unusable - non?!

OP posts:
GinaTonic · 17/12/2008 01:35

Sholto still used in emigration countries like New Zeland. I've just spent a year with one and it's cool; has character.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 09:49

Oh yes, you're right Ermintrude is the the cow!!

Well that just shows that even people who are 'of an age' to remember the originals, and maybe have seen some of the 'remakes' too, even they don't definitely absolutely remember the names and associate them absolutely with characters!

gladders · 17/12/2008 10:27

Don't like Mungo or Sholto...

Ivo is a great Scottish name in the same vein?

Also like Jago - but wrong end of country!!

sleepyeyes · 18/12/2008 22:21

I love Sholto, I know a child down south with that name he is such a great funny little boy. I also heard of another Sholto,
again down south although its a very old scottish name.
