Sholto? Mungo?

delightedoldbag34 · 14/12/2008 18:26

Looking for a name for our impending DS. So far we like Alexander (Lex for short), Nairn, and Hector.
Sholto and Mungo have been suggested and I quite like them both. We DO live in Scotland and wonder whether we can get away with them? Or are they just too ?
(I have checked the national stats and there were 0 Mungos or Sholtos registered in Scotland in 2007).

Nairn's a strange place, don't name him that please!

Hector is lovely but in danger of being very popular now, I live in a very small town and there are 3 I know of.

Alexander, lovely also but again popular but at least it's classic so not popular in the same terms as Hector iyswim?

Mungo - I rather like that

Have you thought about Struan, Lachlan, Munro?

singersgirl · 14/12/2008 21:08

There was a Hector at DS1's nursery and his mother was always saying "Heck...come here" etc. I thought 'heck' was a pretty awful shortening really. Having said that, I quite like Hector.

For some reason Mungo doesn't sound very intelligent to me - maybe it's the 'Mary, Mungo and Midge' associations, or maybe it's the similarity (to me) to Dumbo.

Sholto I just think of as really posh and pretentious - sorry.

My favourite is Alexander, but I agree it's very common, even in England.

Nairn is interesting, though I do think of oatcakes.

Sidge · 14/12/2008 21:08

Sorry I don't like any of them.

I went out with an Angus, which I think is cool.

I also like Fraser, Benedict, Rory and Gregory (not especially Scottish though.)

Boco · 14/12/2008 21:10

How about Django

BakewellTarts · 14/12/2008 21:11

DD has a lovely friend called Sholto and it really suits him. Goes great with his very short surname and both parents are of Celtic ancestry. Personally I really like unusual real names with a bit of history and so would encourage you to use it.

PS I do like Alexander but know SO many of them under 5 that I'd be tempted to find another name.

preggersplayspop · 14/12/2008 21:17

I don't like any of them. They do sound a bit try-hard, I think there's a reason why there have been none registered in Scotland last year!!

I like Alexander, but not Lex. Alex is nice.

Fraser is great though and I like Nairn too.

Quattrocento · 14/12/2008 21:22

I love Hector and Alexander and Sholto and Mungo - all lovely names.

The only minor problem I have with the names is that they are all terribly (with the exception of Alexander) terrribly middle-class

abraid · 14/12/2008 21:24

We have a Mungo who loves football, is quite bright and generally rather quirky. We chose the name as it is a family name and because of the meaning.

Anna8888 · 14/12/2008 21:27

I love Alexander (my DSS1 is Alexandre) but doubt you could get people to call him Lex for short.

I think all the other names are trying a bit hard. Unless you are an aristocrat.

SpangleMaker · 14/12/2008 21:58

hello there delighted

I like your choices - never heard Sholto before but quite like it. Mungo - if you'd asked me a couple of years ago I'd have said no (well, for me anyway) because of Mary Mungo & Midge but since then I've known a Mungo through work and think it's a really nice name. Just shows an association isn't really important: as soon as you meet the person you forget instantly.

NotanOtter · 14/12/2008 22:06

our neighbour had a dd Sholto

i would use that its lovely

i have just named ds a name and people just look a bit none plussed

the thing is - these names are 'growers' people forever say to us ' we did not like ( insert whichever childs name) when you announced it but now we do'

go for it !

Quattrocento · 14/12/2008 22:09

Isn't Sholto a boy's name? Am sure it is ...

NotanOtter · 14/12/2008 22:10

yes it is - but they named their baby girl it

I dont get the trying too hard bit
maybe that is cos i DO try hard

i love names!

EachPeachPearMum · 14/12/2008 22:16

Hector is just lovely!

Mungo is too 'Watch with Mother' for me

I have never come across Sholto before.

I love names too

delightedoldbag34 · 14/12/2008 23:08

oooh me too , I love names.

Hello Spangle - nice of you to visit my thread!
Good to hear you know someone called Mungo and he's nice. BTW I have a nephew called Felix - he is the most beautiful blonde, blue eyed boy. When I hear his name I never think about cat food - wouldn't even cross my mind!

Anna8888 - the reason we like Lex as a name is because of someone we know who is called Lex. His 'real' name is Alexander but I've never heard him called that. That's what we'd do I think - his official name would be Alexander but he'd actually be Lex.

I am liking Mungo and Sholto though - hmmm.
Munro is also on the list, but wonder if it's too similar to Murdo (in the family)?

Associations a bigger problem for men.

My x used to say "I used to cycle round the block with a girl called Polly" (in 1977, he needed to let that go) and "no Dulcie is was the dinner lady" riiiiiight, so that's no and no is it? or is it good??

too weird was out, too normal and there was bound to be somebody he didn't like with that name.

beforesunrise · 15/12/2008 08:52

I really like Sholto. I don't really "get" Mungo. Nairn is interesting, but how do you pronounce it? and Hector is a BEAUTIFUL name!

MrsSeanBean · 15/12/2008 09:32

Both good names. I particularly like Mungo.

happymerrychristmas · 15/12/2008 10:10

I really like Mungo and Hector.

I don't mind Sholto and Nairn.

I find Alexander a little boring and unimaginative... and he's likely to be called Alex (of which there are so many boys and girls).

Amberc · 15/12/2008 10:14

How about Laud? There is a little boy at nursery called Laud and I thought it was cool!

TheOtherMaryPoppinsJingles · 15/12/2008 11:58

beforesunrise - Nairn = same as Bairn lol

NotanOtter · 15/12/2008 21:34

like oatcakes

babblington · 15/12/2008 21:45

what about Murdo?

delightedoldbag34 · 15/12/2008 23:11

I like oatcakes!

My nephew is Murdo so that's out.
Sorry,
