Has anyone ended up just settling for a name because they couldn't find one they loved?

We're trying to name DS2 at the moment and it's a massive struggle. DS1 was named from about 12 weeks pg and we agreed on the name straight away.
This time round, it's like DH and I aren't even on the same planet. There's barely anything we can agree on and those names that we do agree on are only in the 'ok' bracket.
Has anyone ended up with a name they thought was only ok? Just wondering if I would grow to like it, or end up regretting not looking harder for something I loved?!

After DS1 we at first struggled at finding another boy's name we liked even half as much. We did finally choose a name (just after DS2 was born & we discovered it was another boy) which we both liked. I have to say, I think I now prefer DS2's name to DS1's! I think you need to start from scratch, that's what we did, got out all the baby names books & started the lists again. I'm sure that you will find another name you like just as much as your DS1's

Your post could have been me 3 years ago!!!!!!! We both loved the name for DS1 (indeed still do!) but when DS2 came along, we were on different planets - eg I liked Jasper, DH liked Gordon. I liked Ollie, he liked Torquil (eek!)

Anyway, it got to day 3 when the hormones kicked in and I was fed up of calling DS2 "Baby". We both had a shortlist of 10 or so names, and the only one we could agree on (his number 5, my number 9) we went for!!!!!!!!!!

Incidentally, he really suits his name, and whilst I still don't love the name, I love him so much, which at the end of the day, is all that matters

good luck!

Hmm, not quite the same but dh chose dd3's name and although I liked it, I didn't love it. Dh loved it - I just thought it was ok.

It has took me aaaages to get used to it (she is 17 months old now) but I like it more and more every day, because its dd's name and she is soooo adorable, even Beryl would see nice

mickeymistletoe · 14/12/2008 14:16

i'm in the same position. i just cant think of anything for this bean. i loved and still love DS's name and dont want to settle for anything less. hopefully something will come to me before he or she is born!

whatironing · 15/12/2008 10:41

dd is due in 3 weeks. I had a name I loved but dh has just 'gone off it'. he has suggested a name I'm not sure about. one of us will end up settling (and I'm sure it will be me)!!

Tortington · 15/12/2008 10:44

yip we had an ok girls name becuase dh has a chavheart, and i couldnt subject my daughter to ridiculous name like leanne. he is such a hillbilly.

so, we picked an OK name and now i love it.

2pt4WiseMen · 15/12/2008 10:47

We picked an ok name with DS2... I never was 100% convinced on it but agreed because I couldnt think of anything else really.
The minute DS2 was born another name came to me and I called him that!
It took DH a while to get used to it! but I loved it and still do love it 10months later.
So glad I changed my mind!

belgo · 15/12/2008 10:48

It's very hard to chose the perfect name, and most parents have to compromise somehow. I'm very lucky that I love all my children's names.

belgo · 15/12/2008 10:49

Is Leanne a ridiculous name? Have I missed something?

Tortington · 15/12/2008 10:50

yes i think so. if we all had the same opinion our children wouldn't be distinguishable by name.

feel free to disagree, lovely to be able to do so don't you think.

belgo · 15/12/2008 10:52

It's one of the few names that I have very little opinion on.

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 15/12/2008 10:52

Dh chose ds's name because there was nothing at all that I liked. I have had 5 years to get my head round it and do think the name suits him.

Dannat · 15/12/2008 10:54

DH would say that he had to settle for DS' name and to a point he is right because we agreed early on in the pg what he would be called. I fell in love with it, as I did with DD's name, DH went right off it.

Once DS was here and I was all loved up with him, there was no way I was changing my mind about his name because I felt it suited him totally.

DH has come round now but it did take some work. He was the same with DD. I think it was more that he was miffed that he couldn't come up with any decent names for either of them

Tortington · 15/12/2008 10:54

oh?

throckenholt · 15/12/2008 10:56

yep - with 2 out of the 3 of mine.

I don't regret it - because they are still them - whatever their name - and they are now their name - if you see what I mean.

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 15/12/2008 11:00

i had a week to go before my due date was due with no baby names for a boy and a girl...we were looking for a unique name but managed to find one we both love

KatieDD · 15/12/2008 12:22

Yes my third DD's name DH loves, I didn't not like it so went along with it.
She does suit it though so no complaints however I now have a name I love if we have number 4.
My boys name I had for her which I did love at the time I can't stand now so thank goodness she was a girl.

catweazle · 15/12/2008 12:49

Yes. DS3 who is now 17, and DD2 who is 20 months. DH vetoed all my names and could only make stupid suggestions (Roger anyone?).

I was in 2 minds whether to give DD2 her sister's name (she was 21, and shortens it to something we hate) because it is the only name I love. Didn't feel it was quite right tho.

sorkycake · 15/12/2008 12:55

Are you after traditional or slightly unusual is often a good place to start, I always think.

Socio-economic status can matter (see recent Ptolemy/Cosmo thread).

Do you want to name the child after someone?

You could just wait until he's born and see what he looks like

hairymcleary · 16/12/2008 02:49

Sorkycake, that's part of the problem... I'm after something slightly unusual or Celtic (DS1's name fits that criteria), however DH keeps coming up with suggestions like Jeff, Tim and Micheal. None of which I like, esp as they don't 'fit' with DS1's name.
The only one we generally agree on is Max, although DH thinks full name should be Maximus, which I think is a bit pretentious. I might have to end up compromising on that, because it would probably just end up being used on birth certificate only.

OP posts:
Peabody · 16/12/2008 03:15

Maximillian, surely. Maximus is strictly for Russell Crowe lookalikes.

chandellina · 16/12/2008 11:52

it took us three weeks after DS was born to settle on calling him Max. (actually it's Maxwell). I think it's a decent name but it wasn't even on our list. Now it's him though so i don't even think about it.
BTW, a celtic alternative is Macsen (it's Welsh). We liked it a lot, and it lends itself to the Max nickname, but we went the safer route ourselves.

NotanOtter · 16/12/2008 11:54

yes ds4 name was more dp's choice than mine as he was fourth son - i had used faves

BUT

wow what a grower i LOVE it now as it is SOOOOO him!

NotanOtter · 16/12/2008 11:55

I like maximus a lot

ScottishMummy · 16/12/2008 11:57

oh yes gluteus maximus sounds nice.very appropriate
