We just liked the name. We had a shortlist of 4, and when dd was born, we just immediately knew what to call her.

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 16:44

I dreamt it but I later found out it's a family name twice over - with the alternative spelling in one case, presumably to differentiate it from the other one.

Same surname as well which is a trifle spooky .

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 10/12/2008 16:45

Dd was born in 1998 at the height of Friends, everyone thought we had named her after one of the girl characters but we didn't. I have always liked dd's name and told dh what it was to be even before we got married (just as well we had a girl!).

Ds was dh's choice. I couldn't come up with anything I liked, although I do like ds's name now and he likes it.

thisisyesterday · 10/12/2008 16:45

ds1 was picked because I have an obsession with something and it was one of the characters names and I have always loved it lol
dp agreed for different reasons (another famous-ish person that he rather likes has same name)

ds2 was just because we really liked it, I kind of feel a bit sad that there isn't a real reason behind it iyswim? but there you go

JRocksaNadelekLowen · 10/12/2008 16:46

Because we wanted a Cornish name and it was the only boy one we both liked

shubiedoo · 10/12/2008 16:46

The first two I had specific reasons, and some family connections.
But for this one due in Feb, I just like the name!

MrsMattie · 10/12/2008 16:46

Picked both just because we liked them, but middle names are after family members (grandfathers for DS, grandmothers and great grandmother for DD)

francagoestohollywood · 10/12/2008 16:48

We just liked the names and they were both family names. We didn't put that much thought in choosing a name to be honest, didn't seem that important.

ohreindeerwhatamessysleigh · 10/12/2008 16:52

Ds1 - liked the name, and it happened to be the name of both of dh's grandfathers.

Ds2 - was my late FIL's name, and we sort of liked the name (and couldn't agree on names we liked more). Grown to like it now, although we rarely call him by it.

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 10/12/2008 16:53

Becasue we liked them.
Middle names were picked for reasons.

peacelily · 10/12/2008 16:54

Liked it and wanted soemthing short so it suited also liked the meaning behind it (dd)

Middle name family name but liked it anyway.

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 16:57

Wanted real names which were uncommon and from outside the top 100.
Ds1's name has since zoomed about halfway up.

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2008 16:59

Always liked DS's name. When we found out we were having a boy I said to DH "So we can call him Name then?" and he agreed. It was also DH's maternal grandfather, then, while I was pg, DH's dad was doing his family tree and found 7 generations of Name prior to his own father. So it all tied up nicely. Middle names - my most favorite uncle and FIL. The three names scan well and are very"dull" old testament names, that go well with our ordinary surname.

rislip · 10/12/2008 17:00

my gorgeous grannys name, i do wish it wasn't so popular now though.

RumMum · 10/12/2008 17:09

I used to work in a hair dressers and a client brought her beautiful, chubby, smiley, baby in, her name was unusual, but could be shortened to Ellie... I fell in love with the baby and name, so when DD was born a short time later we called her by the same name.. thinking that we would shorten it to Ellie... (we don't, her nickname is Elle-belle)

of course if the baby had winged, smelt and was ugly I would have hated the name!

Gorionine · 10/12/2008 17:20

DD1: I had met a little girl with that name and just loved her and her name.

DS2 :named after DH's brother who saddely died as a baby.

DS3: Just a name We had on the side if DD1 had been a boy and that we somehow did not feel like giving to DS2 (this made me think that names are part of the child's personality)

DD4: I had such an easy pregnancy and birth that I chose the arabic version of Comfort for her, she has so far not let me down.

wombleprincess · 10/12/2008 19:49

wanted a girls name that was strong and not ditsy and also couldnt shorten it

luckily dh agreed with it..

ib · 10/12/2008 19:54

Wanted a name that would be pronounced identically in both English and Spanish. Could come up with about 3 of them and dh vetoed 2 as being too common.

If we ever have another baby, I'll have to hope it's not a boy or we'll be stuck!

ScottishMummy · 10/12/2008 19:57

hummed and hawed for months.but simply liked it the best of the choices

dd1 got her name because it was the only one we could agree on. It is a Shakesperean name and we kind of got into that and stuck with it for dd2 and dd3. My girls all have feisty and admirable Shakepearean characters for namesakes therefore.

DD1 (Eloise). Chose that because we wanted something normal but not boring. I also wanted a feminine name that was pretty but not too cutsy/girlie. I wanted a modern feel to the name, without it being a new name (Eloise was at the height of its popularity 1900 - 1930)Eloise is quite tradtional and has a long history to it. I also really like the character of Heloise (as in Eloise and Abelard) even though the story is quite sad. I also liked the name after Princess Eloise was born, and figured if it was good enough for royalty (Dutch), then its good enough for me .

DD2 (Katherine) is a compromise. I wanted Annabel but was vetoed because it didn't really go with the surname. Unfortunately, hubby was right. Its still not my favourite name, but it was the only one we even remotely agreed on. However, it does get shortened to Kitty or Katie, which I feel does give it a more modern feel and that's our compromise!

DD1's name was decided on before I even got pregnant, DD2s name was still being debated 6 months after she was born! Its hard when you have one name that you love and then you're naming a second child with no name in particular that grabs you!

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 11/12/2008 14:18

Even though she is a girl dd1 is named after my uncle who died shortly before my 18th birthday and my dad.

dd1 decided on dd2's name. I think she was named after a girl in dd1's nursery class

ketal · 11/12/2008 14:20

Fogot to say - I also wanted names that the girls could shorten if they did not like their names (Important to me as a person who hates her name!) and I also wanted something that they could use to blend in if they wanted to (Eloise can be Ellie for example), but also was not going to be one of 5/6 in her class. We do not know of any other children their ages with the same name.
