Couldn't decide on a name for DD, all the ones I liked DH hated and vice versa. Trawled the net for hours and hours, finally came across DD's name and both immediately loved it. My mum hated it to begin with but now loves it.

DD named DS

TheOldestCat · 11/12/2008 14:32

It was easy for us. DD is named for two incredible women, sadly no longer with us - my grandmother and DH's sister.

Wispabarsareback · 11/12/2008 14:47

My criteria for names were:

  1. Names had to be 'normal' enough not to make anyone bat an eyelid, but not so common that there would be loads of them in the same class at school. My DDs' names are both in the top 50 most popular girls' names, I think, but not in the top 20.
  1. Names had to be straightforward to say and to spell - having a complicated name myself, I wanted to avoid the boring scenario where they always have to explain how to pronounce their name, or how it should be spelled. And they have a foreign-sounding surname that usually needs to be clarified, so I wanted their first names to be unproblematic.
  1. Names had to pass the 'foreign secretary' test - I wanted names that suited them as little girls but that will also suit them as they grow up, no matter what they end up doing.
  1. Finally, I wanted names that would make my DDs unplaceable in terms of generation or class. I didn't want names that were too trendy or too ubiquitous among this generation of children, and I didn't want names that hinted at any particular social class.
  1. Oh yes, and I had to like the way they sounded of course!

I think I succeeded in meeting all my exacting criteria with both DDs - wasn't easy though!

LoolaBoys · 11/12/2008 21:11

DS1 was named after DH's grandfathers. What a waste of time, never do that it is not appreciated by the people involved. Have a work colleague who also used family names and was not appreciated.

DS" was a name we both kind of liked for a while, came out of nowhere really. Middle name is my maiden name though

Hulababy · 11/12/2008 21:15

DH came up with it one day and decided he liked it. I did too. Just felt right. So, Mollie she is and it really suits her and I still really like her name.

BikeRunSki · 11/12/2008 22:16

I'd disagree with loolaboys. DS's middle name is after my lovely, lovely uncle. He didn't know we were going to do it and was genuinely surprised and touched when we told him. DS was born at 6.30 on a Sunday morning. Uncle found out at about 8am, with name and reason. Later that day he did a 10K run and did a personal best!

minouminou · 12/12/2008 14:28

i minored in medieval history, and, in my 1st year at uni, i was reading through some dreadful tome about the crusades, when i came across this name and i was thunderstruck
i thought it would be staggeringly cool to be called it, and that was that....i remember the moment really well
throughout the intervening years, the name kept cropping up in coincidences and meaningful ways, which just reinforced it
had an awful lot of opposition, but everyone can see that DS suits it, as he's a very - ahem - urbane sort of chap already

sammybeth · 12/12/2008 14:30

We just liked the name but when our ds was born and we told everyone the name it turned out to be my dp,s great-grandfathers name.

silentnightplease · 12/12/2008 14:51

This is a sad admission but here goes...
During my first pregnancy, with DD, i had a major craving for burgers. So, often on a Saturday, DH and I would plod along to wimpy and eat shite! After a while we stared to look at the names of the waitresses and go - oh that would be a good name for the baby or - let's definately NOT have that name on the list.

Anyway, when I went in to labour, we had about 3 or 4 names we liked, not all from waitresses! We did pick one of their names in the end - it's not atall unusual but there are no others in DDs year at school.

DS has the name that has been the most common boys name for the last millenium but I don't care - it suits him and is a family name on DHs side!

BTW I have hated Wimpy ever since and am glad to say I did manage to lose all the burger induced baby weight!

RachieB · 12/12/2008 15:32

lol wispa, and what names DID you choose in the end ?

Eldest son( Connor) his dad liked the name i wasnt too sure at first but no one else liked my other boys names choices!! lol

Youngest son (Ellis)I loved the name Ella for a girl choice, and then came across all the EL boys names
Elliott,Ellis,Elijah etc and settled on Ellis, when we found out it was a boy

mankymummy · 12/12/2008 15:36

My DS's first name is the same as my dads (I promised myself when my dad died if i ever had a son i'd name him after him), and his middle name is his other grandads.

DD1 - favourite girls name.

DD2 - lovely family name although from several generations back.

Middle names linked by a theme.

Love both DDs names.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 12/12/2008 21:04

Dp chose dd's name and I still dont like it. Its not a 'power' name and I cant imagine an adult being called it IYSWIM.

Dp wanted it since he found it in a book and I said no. When dd was born he was naming a folder for her on the computer and just said go for it - I now regret it x

theramones · 12/12/2008 21:48

DD's first name was for dh paternal nan (although she wasn't known by that name), her second name is the same as both of my Gran's second names. She chose her confirmation name last week, it is the same name as dh maternal nan.
DS, has dh paternal grandfather's name, followed by my dads name and his third name is the same as both dh and my maternal grandfathers.
Gosh, non of my kids names are there own.

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 12/12/2008 21:50

DD (Aaliyah) was called it cos we liked the name then when DP came home after she was born to look for names (As we couldn't decide) he noticed that the singer aaliyah had the same birthdate and she was called babygirl as a nickname which is what they put on her cot as we didn't know what to call her.

tengreenbottles · 15/12/2008 13:39

We decided dd's name because it was the only one in the whole sodding book we could agree on and said that whichever sex baby we had that was the name we would use

tengreenbottles · 15/12/2008 13:41

In our defence there is a mum on here who has a boy with the same name so it is one of those neutral names like rowan

KatieDD · 15/12/2008 13:44

We just liked them, with DD 1 we hadn't decided after 6 hours so my mum named her after the girl on little house on the phrarie, Laura lol

Wags · 15/12/2008 13:48

DD - I just liked the name and made darn sure that DH also liked it by the time she was born. DS named after famous rugby player but I also loved the name so that was OK. I could see DH's train of thought was getting out of hand so I suggested the only player's name that I liked and thank goodness so did he. Middle name for DS, well less said about that the better, but had lost the will to live by then so I let DH get on with it
