I recently saw the name 'Naterlee' which I assume was for 'Natalie'.

Of course, anyone is perfectly entitled to call a child whatever they wish

When a name is clearly mis-spelt, should the registrar not question it?

I do feel sorry for a child lumbered with such an obviously mis-spelt name.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

yes i think they should

nickytinseltimes · 09/12/2008 20:42

I see you are already perfecting your disclaimer there, Mrs Bean.

That is pretty bad, isn't it?

MrsSeanBean · 09/12/2008 20:44

Hi tinsel. An early working draft

I thought it was very succinct.

kingfix · 09/12/2008 20:47

a friend's dh was a registrar. In these cases he'd say something like 'oh that's an unusual spelling, I haven't seen that before. How interesting, is it a tradition in your family?'

LynetteScavo · 09/12/2008 20:47

Our registrar questioned my choice of name!

Yes I did want to spell DS's name with a C and not a K,thankyou, and no I didn't want to call DD Tatania - I really did mean Tatiana!

She said she wasn't supposed to interfere, but she couldn't help herself.

TheCrackFox · 09/12/2008 20:48

Well it is a free country but having an "original" spelling must be a massive PITA.

kalo12 · 09/12/2008 21:10

i would point out the miss spelling. poor spelling and literacy is nothing to be ashamed of, i would rather it was pointed out to me

in lynettes case obv was registrar who was not sure of spellings. Tatiana is agorgeous name btw

pregapuss · 09/12/2008 23:52

Are you sure it was an accident? Surely if you are naming a child you look all this up if you are bad at spelling?

ToysAreLikeDogs · 09/12/2008 23:54

I have seen more than one birth cert with MICHEAL or RACHEAL in my previous job

BoccaDellaNativita · 10/12/2008 00:04

Was it a birth certificate or other official or reliable document? I ask because in my experience nurseries and other places often have a very (ahem) approximate way of spelling our beloved infants' names.

Nancy66 · 10/12/2008 14:20

there's so many kids with daft names that they're probably used to it.

tessofthedurbervilles · 10/12/2008 15:01

I am sat at work and can actually see someone whose name is 'Keef' He looked a bit sheepish when he had to spell it to my colleague....poor man is about 40 but still looks mortified...

southeastastra · 10/12/2008 15:02

maybe his parent's were stones fans

tengreenbottles · 10/12/2008 16:42

Perhaps her parents are trying to instil phonics at an eraly age

SnowOfHands · 10/12/2008 16:47

There's a Prayshus at M&T. Her mother says she wanted it to be 'easy to spell' so she knew what she was doing.

largeginandtonic · 10/12/2008 16:49

DS has a Kacper at school

snowleopard · 10/12/2008 16:49

We were quite surprised when the registrar didn't bat an eyelid at our choice of name, even though it isn't actually a name (it's a name of an thing, but not previously used for a baby AFAIK). (Although we did spell it right!) So smooth and unruffled was his demeanour we wondered if they had special training in keeping your gob shut.

snowleopard · 10/12/2008 16:50

an thing? Doh

OhGetOverMyself · 10/12/2008 16:51

God I am so sad for Keef

Is he single?

OhGetOverMyself · 10/12/2008 16:51

I think kacper Polish name, non?

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 16:51

elliott · 10/12/2008 16:51

I used to work with someone called 'Robat' which was a mispelling He was about 50 so its clearly not a new problem...

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 16:52
