I recently saw the name 'Naterlee' which I assume was for 'Natalie'.

Of course, anyone is perfectly entitled to call a child whatever they wish

When a name is clearly mis-spelt, should the registrar not question it?

I do feel sorry for a child lumbered with such an obviously mis-spelt name.

FYI - Micheal is a gaelic version of Michael, pronounced Mee-hawl

Registrars in Germany can refuse a made-up name or one that does not make clear if the baby is a boy or a girl.

I knew a woman who had to give her baby Kim a 2nd name so that it was clear that the baby was a girl

madlentileater · 10/12/2008 16:58

problem with 'Naterlee' and 'Prayshus' is that they both look ignorant rather than unusual/idiosyncratic.
Not keen on 'unusual' spellings either, really.
So true about nursery staff (and swimming instructors)- 2 of my dcs have names which are not that unusual, spelt correctly and conventionally but STILL people have got them wrong!

What DS's name? I can't on here, it would identify me immediately. You can have a guess if you like, I don't think you'll get it. It's not anything everyday, like armchair or potato.

madlentileater · 10/12/2008 17:00

River?

snowleopard · 10/12/2008 17:01

Honestly I think if I was called Robat or Keef, I'd just go with the normal spelling except for on official documents.

Umlellala · 10/12/2008 17:05

Tinsel? Cloud? Peace? Leaf? Bell? Fox?
what does it begin with?

My ds is Sky so am fascinated by unusual boys names!

McDreamy · 10/12/2008 17:06

DD used to go to school with a Feebee!

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 17:07

Patio?

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 10/12/2008 17:08

I know a Caycee and a man called Kristin (his parents spelt it incorrectly it should have been Kristian)

snowleopard · 10/12/2008 17:09

Not telling you!

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 10/12/2008 17:09

Oh and an ex-colleague's niece was Ju-Leigh

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 10/12/2008 17:36

Keef is terrible. Why didn't he change it? It is reasonably easy to do so I believe

Jux · 10/12/2008 18:06

At school I knew a girl who spelt her name Joolya. I think it was a teenage thing though.

dontcallmehon · 10/12/2008 19:40

I know a Kortni.

storkycake · 10/12/2008 19:46

River is a fabulous name

storkycake · 10/12/2008 19:47

dontcallmehon.....say it isn't true!?

angel1976 · 10/12/2008 19:48

My friend's sister's name was Jooley. Her mum wanted to name her after Julie Andrews but spelt it phonetically and it ended up Jooley. She changed it by deed poll in her 20s to the right spelling...

I did see a little girl's name in a nursery I visited and it was Mercades...

storkycake · 10/12/2008 19:49

I nearly pmsl when I read somewhere that a registrar had to persuade an american couple from calling their daughter vageena

lovelydear · 10/12/2008 19:54

the registrar who 'did' our ds not only expressed her (positive) view of our fairly nonstandard choice of name but also announced that hers was called Wolf.

happymostofthetime · 10/12/2008 19:57

I once nursed a little girl called Shantel

Anna8888 · 10/12/2008 20:00

Well, of course I agree MrsSeanBean - both about the mis-spelling, and also about registrars saving preventing people from themselves making these awful mistakes.

But this opinion is, as you know, not universal on MN

georgimama · 10/12/2008 20:06

DH was congratulated by registrar on DS's name - I think she had had enough of Destinees and Jaydens that day.

Registrar would be doing said child a service by questioning mad spelling but would probably get nutted for their trouble.

RachelG · 11/12/2008 09:43

It's a bit harsh for the child, becuase they won't be able to have balloons/door signs/keyrings etc with their name on. It also looks pretentious I think.

Wisknit · 11/12/2008 09:43

It just reminds me of Terrys Pratchett's Magrat. Whose daughter ends up Esmerelda 'note spelling' Margaret.

Maybe the parent's just have a sadistic streak and look forward to their child have to constantly spell heir name (not that I ever considered that before I had children )
