MADISON?

I had never heard it for a girl before but SIL keeps sugging it for a girls name

I am not too sure and I first thought it was a boys name when she said it!

Just wanted to ask what you all think as MIL really likes it too.

We have a short surname so wanted a fairly long first name to go with it.

What are your views?

I know it is my decision etc I am just interested in what everybody else thinks as I had never heard it before.I am not going to choose a name just because they like it. Sorry if my post suggested I would.

I know of two girls with this name. It seems to be getting popular.

(I always thought a Madison was a type of bike race, but I did grow up around a lot of cycling.)

There is a little girl called Madison in DS3 class. She is a lovely delicate little girl. But as belgo says if you do not like it you should not let anyone push you into choosing it for your own child.

It is the name of a former American president, which would be ok, if that's all it were, and if it were used as some sort of not to the president, but then it was an Avenue, and then a mermaid, and then it was the name millions of people who watched splash called their dd.

Now it#s jaded and boring.

JMO sorry.

Madeleine is much prettier and they can both be shortened to Maddy.

I know 2 madisons and a maddy. Gorgeous GIRLS and a name I'd have liked myself if we have another girl - except a friend got there first.

My dd1 is Maddison. We chose the spelling as on purpose as she is not named after Madison Avenue.

We also thought Maddie was a nicer shortening of the name if it was that spelling. Her nn. now though is Mads- we hardly ever call her Maddie

Our other daughter is Meredith (nn. Merry).

I am biased but I think it is a lovely name.

Not overly girly- but could be if wanted to.

This name was first created in the film Splash with Daryl Hannah about a mermaid and has since become a consistent top ten hit girls name in the USA.

It's not to my taste at all but you should definitely follow your own opinion with something as personal as name choice. It would be a dull world indeed if we all liked the same things.

Now for a bit of hypocrisy given what I have said above.....

But you know what Pregapuss, I think you need to chose a name that YOU and your DP like. You seem to be trying to please everyone, your entire family, friends, and of course the whole of Mumsnet .

We never ever tell people our prospective names. Someone will always tell you they don't like it/can't spell it/know someone called it they don't like.

We only reveal the name once the baby is born. And it is a very rare person who will tell you THEN they don't like. And what is more, even if they don't like it at first, it will grow on them as they will associate it with your darling babe.

You choose a name you guys like (even if it is Elouise ) Stop trying to do it by consensus (certainly among your RL circle), it will never work!

If your SiL likes madison so much - tell her to go off and have herself a baby girl (or buy a dog)...

I really don't like it, sorry. But then I didn't like Cady or your spelling of Eloise either, so you'd probably be better off ignoring me!

Hmm, Madison........as in "Avenue" and "Square Gardens"!!!!

Just sounds a little bit pretentious IMO.

Got to agree witt turniphead here....you are best off keeping it a secret from others until bubba arrives then if some stupid person tells you they hate it you are free to let rip all your new mother hormones.

I obbessed about my sons name but when I saw him I knew it was right!

As I said before. I am not trying to please others, I don't really like the name but just interested to see what MN thought. Would never give a baby a name that wasn't mine and my DHs choice. I just wanted the opinions of people on MN isn't that what this section is for?
