Ted as official name?

Really like the name Ted for my new baby boy, but is it too informal too be his official name? I'm not keen on going for Edward or Theodore, would rather register him with the name we'll call him ... views welcome!

If you like the name, use it.

I have never understood why people register their child with a name they will never use (unless they are going to call their child "binky-boo" in which case being registered as Elizabeth is probably a good thing).

The only thing is that you are going to find that people lengthen his name for you. Teachers will call him Edward and so, quite possibly, will maiden aunts. But then I am forever telling people not to shorten my DD's name, so it is an issue for lots of us one way or another...

My DS is Billy and not William. i wanted to call him Billy and dont actually like William. Why should he have a name on his birth certificate that we will never use? I dont want him to go to school and keep saying thats not my name. I have only come across one person (DH's grandma who lengthens his name to William but she does this in fun so it doesnt bother me)

Ted is great btw.

I think if you like it, it is fine, it's a cute name. My DS has the short version of a name.

nickytinseltimes · 09/12/2008 19:27

Personally I don't like the informal version being used as the name.
Better to give him teh Sunday name, call him Ted (which is absolutely lovely!) and leave it up to him.

SalBySea · 09/12/2008 19:30

I think putting a full version on his birth cert gives him more options for the future

My BIL reverted to the long version of his name when he went into business even though noone had ever called him by it because the shortened version he had been going by was just too informal for the cut-throat business he was in and he feels he is taken more seriously with his full name

robbiesbiggestfan · 09/12/2008 20:29

I love the name Ted and I think you should be able to do what you want re your baby's name.
I have a friend whose son is called Ted both IRL and on his birth cert!

MrsSeanBean · 09/12/2008 21:22

Personally I would always put the full version on the birth certificate but make it clear what the child would be known as. That way they have the option to use the other version if they prefer it when they grow up.

Ted is cute. I also like the name Edward (but known as Bear).

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 09/12/2008 21:26

I would call him the name you want him to be known by if it really matters to you. If you call him the official name he might end up being called something completely different at school - Neddy or Theo or whatever.

Gemzooks · 10/12/2008 09:35

I would put the full version on the birth cert and call him Ted. The reason is that it gives him more options as salbysea says, and also, just on a personal level, I dislike short forms being the 'official' name. A name should be full, otherwise a pet name or short form isn't a short form any more!

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 16:54

What she said!

pamelat · 10/12/2008 18:03

I would put Ted on the birth certificate.

I think its a lovely name. My DH didnt like it so I was quite relieved to have a girl.

monicker2 · 10/12/2008 19:24

I have a Ted! I absolutely love his name and he is just Ted on the birth certificate.

Priest wasn't overly impressed at Baptism but his middle name is a full (saints) name.

redhotredhead · 10/12/2008 19:29

Love it - would have def had it on my shortlist for another boy

storkycake · 10/12/2008 19:40

If he's definitely going to be 'ted' then name him ted.
If you put edward you risk eddy, theodore-teddy, woody, ned etc.

actually woody is quite nice too, so is ned hmm.

AliceKatharine · 10/12/2008 19:44

I also love the name: I call my ds Ted, although his full name is Edmund. We decided to call him the full version to give him more flexibility with it when he's older. He might want to be known as Ed, or Ned or something else or, indeed, Edmund.

It's your call though. If you're going to call him Ted anyway, it might be best and if he isn't fond of it when he's older, he'll just have to accept it-like many other things in life!

babyloveschristmas · 10/12/2008 19:49

Love it, would use this name but I am having a girl! I would only put a 'full' version on BC if you like it. What about Edwyn?

FlirtyThirty · 11/12/2008 19:04

I'm with the others...full name on BC; Ted at all other times... Gives him the choice and yet you get the name you want.

piscesmoon · 11/12/2008 19:18

I hate Ted-so I would give him the lovely name of Edward and then he can choose.
I know a DC called Jamie, although his full name was James, when he got to about 8yrs he insisted on James.

changer22 · 11/12/2008 19:29

I love Ted too but would worry that people would assume it was really Edward (even though that is lovely too).

I have a friend with a 'Joe' who said a friend of hers who looked after him calls him 'just Joe' as people assume he's Joseph. She told me this in a weary voice and he was only 3 at the time so it had clearly become an annoyance.

I don't see the point of giving a child a name if you are never going to use it. Another friend has children with official names on their birth certificates but they are always called and known by their other names, e.g. Henry is Harry, etc. I don't get it.

piscesmoon · 11/12/2008 21:18

Everyone is bound to assume it is Edward-so you may as well have it on the birth certificate.

Hulababy · 11/12/2008 21:22

I would have Edward or Theodore on the birth certificate and Ted as nn

My DS is Edward on his BC but..
Teddy
Tedster
Ted
Teddy-beddy
Teddles to everyone except the MIL who a week after he was born told a neighbour who asked how Ted was " we don't call him Ted, It's Edward, much nicer" SO I wish I had put it on the BC as Ted!!!
I do think it gives him more options when he is older if you put the full version on. You can call him what you like but at some point he might want to be an Ed or a Ted, who knows.

Can I ask how this aged? We are considering calling our baby Theodore - with the nickname teddy, ted predominantly wil be called these. Did your child when older lean away from the nicknames?

Sandmaennchen · 08/07/2025 21:25

Surely the natural shortening of Edward is Ed or Eddie!!

Tedward would shorten to Ted Grin
