Probably as a middle name.

I am old enough to remember an advertising campaign with the slogan: Watch out watch out there's a Humphrey about (Humphreys were invisible or mysterious entities that were addicted to milk and would thieve your drink of milk if you didn't Watch Out).
So I'd vote No on this one.

dinny · 06/12/2008 20:53

hello still haven't posted books, have you? eek

I like Humphrey - what first name?

my friend just had a Herbert (known as Herbie)

Bluestocking · 06/12/2008 21:01

I love it; I had a lovely childhood friend by the name of Humphrey. I remember the Humphreys. They had red and white striped straws to steal your milk.

nooka · 06/12/2008 21:02

Makes me think of Yes Minister. I've only ever met one Humphrey, and it seemed to suit him (but he was a retired banker when i was a little girl). Middle name no problem.

maretta · 06/12/2008 21:03

Cool - I like a proper middle name like that.

Cocodrillo · 06/12/2008 21:11

We're thinking Fergus for the first name if its a boy.

I'm not brave enough to give Humphrey as a first name...

Not had any books for ages, Dinny, so none to post on, but I think Luna's the real hoarder on our thread !

colacubes · 06/12/2008 22:06

Jojay · 06/12/2008 22:07

aGalChangedHerName · 06/12/2008 22:13

Awful even as a middle name, sorry.

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 06/12/2008 22:16

What....like Humphrey Cushion????

bigbaubleeyes · 06/12/2008 22:18

No

CoteDAzur · 06/12/2008 22:22

Worst name ever seen on these threads. Sorry.

wheredowegofromhere · 06/12/2008 22:24

Well, it all depends what you want.. but you might want to read Nabokov's book first.

Ronaldinhio · 06/12/2008 22:26

i like it

TackyChristmasLights · 06/12/2008 22:39

had a cat called Humphrey so couldn't use it on DS.
Also honestly think it is a bit camp and possibly a bit too posh for a child to cope with at school.

Cocodrillo · 06/12/2008 22:43

Nabokov's character is Humbert Humbert, div.

OP posts:
Bluestocking · 06/12/2008 22:44

"Div"? Love it - great retro insult!

wheredowegofromhere · 06/12/2008 23:08

You're so right, was thinking of something else

Cocodrillo · 06/12/2008 23:09

Makes me think of kids' tv programme in the 70's - Humphrey's House. And the Boots branded baby range, Humphrey's corner.
Not sure on Fergus tbh - sorry

Anglepoise · 07/12/2008 00:08

Love it because I love Humph as a diminutive and as a tribute to the late great Chairman Humph On my list though not sure we are brave enough to use as first name either.

Anglepoise · 07/12/2008 00:09

PS you can do what you want with a middle name I reckon - DD's was roundly mocked by MN

Cocodrillo · 07/12/2008 10:58

wonder what Anglepoises DD's middle name could be?

piscesmoon · 07/12/2008 11:02

As a middle name they can at least hide it!
