Leonardo?

We're expecting our first DS soon and can't think of a name we both love. Live in London, DH is Italian so we need a name that 'works' both here and back in Italy. He's now suggested Leonardo (we'd call him Leo most of the time). At first I thought I loathed it but now I'm not sure - what do you think? Here are some others we've thought of:

Piero
Giovanni (Joe for short)
Alessandro (Alex for short)

Any comments and ideas much appreciated!

I like Leo though unsure about Leonardo... Wonder if the two very well known ones 'own' the name too much IYKWIM?
My friend has an Italian DH, their son is Luca which I think is lovely.

Tinasan · 14/11/2008 13:43

Hmmm yes ladies i think it's the ninja turtle and the disagreeable actor that have been putting me off the name....Nancy66, I loved Luca when expecting my DD but I now know quite a few and have went off it a bit

Adriano?

Fimbo · 14/11/2008 13:45

what is your dd's name?

Bubbaluv · 14/11/2008 13:47

I love Leo, but Leonardo sems a bit OTT to an anglo ear I think. Why not jusy call him Leo? It's not just a shortening, is an actual (and v old) name in it's own right.

2point4kids · 14/11/2008 13:47

Luca
Marco
Micah

Of your list I love
Piero and Alessandro

Tobermory · 14/11/2008 13:49

Matteo?

Nancy66 · 14/11/2008 13:50

Raphael - that's a great name. also a Ninja turtle but much cooler than Leonardo

Buda · 14/11/2008 13:50

I know a Leonardo. His dad is a famous porn star. As is his mum. I kid you not.

Love Luca.

Tobermory · 14/11/2008 13:52

Agree Nancy, great name.

The doctor on delivery ward when i was beign induced with DD was a Raphael, DH deicded if the scans were wrong our first born would be a Raphael too!

francagoestohollywood · 14/11/2008 14:08

Buda are you talking about rocco siffredi????

I like Piero a lot, even if at the moment seems to have dropped from the names radar. I also love Mario, Paolo, and francesco

Tinasan · 14/11/2008 14:18

Fimbo - dd is Elena.

Bubbaluv - wouldn't shorten it to Leo as the Italians would be very confused, and also it wouldn't match the surname.

Glad some of you like Piero - I think I'm warming to this one more and more. Raphael woud actually be Raffaello in Italian and it's a bit of a mouthful...I love Francesco but there are lots in the family already!

Anyone else got any other Leonardo horror stories to finish it off for me completely (thanks for the porno one!!!)

Giovanni and Alessandro I love.

Leonardo reminds me of the revolting di Caprio.

I had a bald friend called Piero, so I would have to reject that one.

Beware of Luca - there are lots where I live, and none of them is remotely Italian!!

Fimbo · 14/11/2008 14:21

Arlo?

francagoestohollywood · 14/11/2008 14:25

Raphael is beautiful in English but not in Italian. Raffaele is more used than Raffaello but I'm not keen.

Leonardo is def a beautiful name, but I'm not keen as it screams "upper middle class", but that of course is my opinion . Mike Bongiorno's youngest son (ask your dh who MB is ) is Leonardo, nickname Leolino

Elena is lovely and would go well with Giovanni (which is another beautiful name)

BabyBaby123 · 14/11/2008 14:28

Angelo
Ciro
Carlo
Nico
Antonio

Not keen on Leonardo

I love Alessandro personally, although Leonardo's nice too.

Bubbaluv · 14/11/2008 15:24

Tinasan, there have been 13 popes called Leo (not Leonardo, just Leo) so I reckon the Italians are used to it by now! But if it doesn't sit well with your surname then it's a goner.

Bubbaluv · 14/11/2008 15:26

Alessandro and Matteo are lovely. What about Marco?

Buda · 14/11/2008 16:51

franca - yes!!!!!!!!!
