Same-ish first name as last night = bad idea??

I really like the name Ben (Benjamin) but my surname is Bendall. Dh thinks that the boy would be teased at school for that name although he does like the name Ben. It would have 2 middle names too.

I've had some mixed reactions from people I've discussed it with (don't normally discuss baby names but cannot decide if its a bad idea or not?). So what does everyone think?

Benjamin Bendall (Ben Bendall) is it just wrong/mean?

Sorry, I do think it sounds wrong. Are there no other names you like?

dilbertina · 11/11/2008 11:03

I wouldn't. ben bendall does have a slightly comical ring to it...

incidentally what were you doing last night?!

penona · 11/11/2008 11:04

Apparently name combinations like that are more memorable and thus can help your child to be more successful in life. Film stars often pick that sort of name for their stage name.

That said, I think I would chose something else. But then my DTs have very traditional (boring) names!!

brimfull · 11/11/2008 11:05

no

ben bendall bender

babymt · 11/11/2008 11:05

What was last night????

BTW is it sad I like the name so much because I'm more than slightly obsessed with Lost?

I like Aston too but dh thinks its a non name.

Comedy name. Nah.

nickytwotimes · 11/11/2008 11:05

Sorry, but it's not a good combo...

MrsMopple · 11/11/2008 11:05

WHy not have Ben as a middle name, then if your ds wants to use it in the future, he can do

dilbertina · 11/11/2008 11:06

babymt, read your thread title again!

babymt · 11/11/2008 11:06

And why are boys names sooooooo blimming hard??!!!!! Luckily I've had 2 girls so far but we never managed to pick a boys name we liked before either.

No - sorry I wouldn't do this.

I have a Mac... surname and for that reason wouldn't choose Max or Zach (much as I like both) because of the sound similarities. But Ben Bendall is even more samey.

It's hard this name game!

Nancy66 · 11/11/2008 11:07

I like a bit of alliteration in a name but Ben bendall doesn't sound quite right, too much of a mouthful.

babymt · 11/11/2008 11:07

OH LOL on thread title. How did I manage that?!?!?!? Can I change it???

I have the worst baby brain ever at the moment!!

Hmm, what about something like Sam? I have a Sam, and for the first few weeks everyone kept calling him Ben

And what happened last night?

babymt · 11/11/2008 11:10

I find it very hard with boys names as have a large family so that discounts loads of names. And all our male friends seem to have taken up all the other normal boys names.

youknownothingofthecrunch - My nephew is Sam. But how can you get Sam mixed with Ben???

OP posts:
MarkStretch · 11/11/2008 11:11

I know a Danny Daniels and a William Bill.

Katisha · 11/11/2008 11:14

No don't do it - he will be mercilessly teased.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 11/11/2008 11:17

I have no idea! But several people did it - very strange

nickytwotimes · 11/11/2008 11:22

We get this at times in rural Scotland, especially north west, where I once lived - Donald McDonald and so on.

I've met two people called John Johnson. I actually think Benjamin Bendall sounds quite cool, but I realise I am probably in the minority on this one. It's very likely he will be known as Ben Bendall which I think is OK too, but if he does end up with a stutter it would be abysmall.

frazzledoldbag34 · 11/11/2008 12:47

It;s a shame because Benjamin is a lovely name but I'd have to advise 'NO'.
What are your other choices?

cheesesarnie · 11/11/2008 12:50

i know a stephen stephens and a jon john
they are bad but Benjamin Bendall sounds lovely.

LuLuBai · 11/11/2008 13:02

Yay cheesesarnie - glad I'm not the only one! Was beginning to think pregnancy had atrophied my tast in names.
