Same-ish first name as last night = bad idea??

I really like the name Ben (Benjamin) but my surname is Bendall. Dh thinks that the boy would be teased at school for that name although he does like the name Ben. It would have 2 middle names too.

I've had some mixed reactions from people I've discussed it with (don't normally discuss baby names but cannot decide if its a bad idea or not?). So what does everyone think?

Benjamin Bendall (Ben Bendall) is it just wrong/mean?

Could you double barrell your name?

Benjamin Yourmaidenname-Bendall

babymt · 11/11/2008 16:57

Well the overwhelming response seems to be NO but its interesting that there are a few yes's. I do think Benjamin Bendall doesn't sound as bad as Ben Bendall but then is Benjamin ever not shortened to Ben?

Frazzle - no other names we both like. DH hates all the names I like. I really like Aston, Austin or Orin.

Fimbo - then DS would have a diff surname to DD's which would be weird.

It could end up being a girl then all this discussion would be pointless LOL. I'm kinda thinking because I can only concentrate on boys names that it must be a boy. Same with how when preg with both girls we picked and agreed on our girls names but no boys names.

ChasingSquirrels · 11/11/2008 22:53

I was at school with an Edward Edwardson - the mind just boggles.

Pollyanna · 11/11/2008 23:06

no I don't think so- we have a similar surname and rejected Ben[jie]

thumbwitch · 11/11/2008 23:09

cruel and unusual punishment - why visit that upon your son?

funnypeculiar · 11/11/2008 23:17

Agree with others that it's ok as Benjamin but not great with Ben.
That'd be a no, then.
Sorry

now, you see, I'd be quite happy with Ben Bendall.

I also use to know a Ken Kendall and thought that fine too.

TheNewsMonger · 12/11/2008 09:11

Well, I know in Scandinavia they have Peter Petersen and so on....... but really, Ben Bendall in GB, I really wouldn't. And I totally feel your pain as I wanted (badly) to call my son Gus García. I ran it past a few people and I tried to convince them that it wasn't that bad, as that was what I wanted hear, but one by one they all winced.

You can have my name! Gus Bendall soudns grat! Guy Bendall, Sam Bendall, Greg Bendall, Max Bendall, Tom Bendall, Chris Bendall, Tim Bendall, Jack Bendall.. any of those snappy one syllable classic boys' names.

LuLuBai · 12/11/2008 09:29

Gus Garcia is absolutely fine. I know someone with an almost identical name to that. Have another boy and call him Gus!

babymt · 12/11/2008 14:23

Dunno what the "Message withdrawn at poster's request" bit is about????

BlackEyedDog.....I saw Ken Kendall and thought oh god no what a name. So I guess my reactions probably answered the initial question.

TheNewsMonger - I really like Max Bendall that sounds good. Know I've mentioned Max before to dh and he said no but now he might be so keen to get rid of Aston he might reconsider Max.

Ok I'm gonna let the whole Ben thing go. Or get divorced ;)

I like Oscar

Pawslikepaddington · 12/11/2008 14:31

It is a lovely sounding name but will get bender for his surname , sorry-kids are so cruel.

MadameCastafiore · 12/11/2008 14:31

Noooo is bad idea!

What about Max Bendall?

Mind you a girl at school's brother was called Thomas Thomas - how weird is that?

jamescagney · 12/11/2008 14:32

babymt, you're surname has reminded me of Bendick's cake (isn't it minty?) you've made me hungy now...

TheNewsMonger · 12/11/2008 14:56

I have met two 'Beverley Beverleys'. The first time I was shocked, the second time, words failed me. How can I have come across 2. That defies the laws of common sense surely? (shirley shirley!).

TheNewsMonger · 12/11/2008 14:57

babymt, maybe she revealed her child's name or a friend's child's name, just fyi, but didn't want to leave it there. turning up in searches and so on.

LunarSea · 12/11/2008 16:17

I used to know a Chinese guy whose names both sounded the same. I'm sure one of them was Chew, and the other Chiu or something like that - but it sounded like Choo Choo. And to make matters worse he'd adopted an Angliscised name in the way that many Chinese do - Thomas!
