I hope!

I originally liked Sophie but posted here asking for ideas. DH and I are Scottish so I thought about haing a Scottish name for our little girl who is due soon.

We're keeping it a secret from everyone we know, but we've picked

Niamh Elizabeth Rose

Thoughts?

lovely

SnoopDog · 31/10/2008 00:03

lovely name,

she will have to spell it for years though,

we are the same with dd,

on the face of it a very simple name,

i was shocked at how many different ways people spelled it,

6 different on her birth cards,

and then there is our surname...

gemmiegoatlegs · 31/10/2008 00:05

well Snoop, I have one seriously dotty old aunt who not only misspelled my dcs names but got them completely wrong altogether. BOTh of them! whats a few spelling mistakes between friends?!

blackhawk · 31/10/2008 00:09

I find I have to spell my name all the time, and it's Nicola! For some reason a lot of people down in England put a h in it?

We lie in North Scotland so hopefully it won't be too much of an issue.

I imagine a lot of people will spell it as it sounds though 'Neev'.

It's lovely, but I thought Niamh was Irish....or are Celtic names interchangeable

Tigerschick · 31/10/2008 06:42

Lovely name.
She will get used to spelling it; I have a very simple name with 2 possible spellings so I always say (but not this name) "Lucy - L-u-c-y."
Congratulations

lilysmummy2007 · 31/10/2008 06:46

sorry to be thick but how is niamh pronounced?

LavenderTea · 31/10/2008 06:49

Lovely name. All parts of it were on our list for dd2 too.
How about Elspeth the Scottish version of Elizabeth. Another on our list.

FanjoForTheHellishMammaries · 31/10/2008 06:52

Niamh is a lovely name..but is definitely Irish and not Scottish!!

Fillyjonk · 31/10/2008 07:38

The only thing is...

Her initials with be NER

I don't know if that matters to you or not, I thought I'd point it out in case you hadn't noticed.

blackhawk · 31/10/2008 07:43

Rose isn't our last name, so her initials won't be NER.

I'm aware that it's an Irish name originally, but it's also become well known in Scotland. That's fine though as I'm really half Irish half Scottish though I very much feel Scottish.

I love Elizabeth for a second name (my daughter's second name is Elisabeth), and Rose is a fab third name.

However, Niamh is very difficult name that doesn't travel at all well...

AbbeyA · 31/10/2008 07:54

I love Elizabeth Rose but I don't like Niamh and I think she will have a lot of difficultly with it.

FanjoForTheHellishMammaries · 31/10/2008 08:05

I live in Scotland and have heard of quite a few Niamhs. I don't think she will have too much difficulty here!!

skyblu · 31/10/2008 08:09

Lilysmummy2007 - you pronounce it Neeve

Lonnie · 31/10/2008 08:59

I love Niamh it was on our shortlist for all 3 girls but none of them looked or felt like a Niamh and yes Elizabeth Rose goes beautifully ..

wonderful choice imo

Lonnie

LivingLaVidaLurker2 · 31/10/2008 09:06

Absolutely beautiful. I love it.

aj13 · 31/10/2008 10:41

I LOVE Niamh. I wanted it for my daughter but partner was picking if was a girl and he would use it as wanted Kara. Its such a beautiful name. well done!! :-)

aj13 · 31/10/2008 10:41

That was meant to be WOULDNT*!!!

scarletlilybug · 31/10/2008 10:49

I think when people say "it doesn't travel well" they mean if you go abroad. Even English-speakers have difficulty with Niamh - if she ever goes to live in France or Spain or somewhere, people will really struggle. But who knows how adventurous she will turn out to be?

Bubbaluv · 31/10/2008 10:55

Until I read this thread I would have assumed you pronounced it as it was spelt I'm afraid.

Liffey · 31/10/2008 10:55

I like Niamh, but I prefer just Eve! If she ever goes to Spain she could use Nieves which is very similar. Snow. Not pronounced the same, but she could just use that in Spain and would be the least problematic solution.

Also like Roisin Elizabeth Niamh which I think runs better.

Bubbaluv · 31/10/2008 10:57

Is lovely, but she will spend her whole life correcting proninciation and spelling. Not that that is a deal breaker though.

Liffey · 31/10/2008 10:57

btw, Fergus is used a lot now in Ireland and people feel they are using an Irish name!

Roisin Elspeth Eve would be my favourite tweaking of your name.

Or Eve Roisin Elizabeth.
