I hope!

I originally liked Sophie but posted here asking for ideas. DH and I are Scottish so I thought about haing a Scottish name for our little girl who is due soon.

We're keeping it a secret from everyone we know, but we've picked

Niamh Elizabeth Rose

Thoughts?

Roisin doesn't travel well either though. I have a friend called Roisin in Australia who spends her whole life soudning like a poisonous gas!

Liffey · 31/10/2008 12:02

I know Roisins who went by Rosie when they were in England. I think it's flexible in that way.

Bubbaluv · 31/10/2008 12:07

That's really nice actually!

MmeTussaudsChmberOfChocHobnobs · 31/10/2008 12:14

It is lovely.

Don't worry about it "travelling well". My name is Lynn and my German MIL still cannot pronounce it, after 16 years. I have been asked if I am from China from someone because they thought that it was spelled Linn.

lilysmummy2007 · 31/10/2008 16:31

great, so if its pronounced neeve why not spell it like that and save the whole spelling dilema?

hullygully · 31/10/2008 16:32

as applicable

stretchmarkSCREAM · 31/10/2008 16:36

Why?

Doozie · 31/10/2008 16:47

Please don?t spell it phonetically! Never do that! It's not that uncommon a name, and people will think you are illiterate. I wince everytime I see names like Siobhan spelt Shuvvorn, or some other horrid bastardised spelling!

Niamh is a lovely celtic name. So she may have to spell it and correct the pronunciation, people have to do that with the most straight forward of first names and last names. She can consider it a world education service!

A lovely combination of names too by the way. But tell me your surname doesn?t start with D, otherwise you will have a problem with the initials!

pointygravedogger · 31/10/2008 17:01

It's not Scottish

blackhawk · 31/10/2008 19:12

pointy, see my third post.

We considered the spelling issue, but considering I'm always having to spell Nicola, and my father always has to spell Graham you can't win really. I lived in America for a long time and they pronounced Nicola as Ni-cola (like coca cola! lol)When I went to France I got the piss taken out of me for having a boy's name.

Doozie, I agree with you. I've actually seen on other forums people having Niamh as Neev or Neeve and it does look very odd. Like spelling Eilidh as Ay-lee!

Have to say, I do love this forum and the fact people are honest. I've been on a few other forums where you never feel like you're getting a truthful opinion.

I thought Niamh was Irish? [hhhm]

I don't think you should worry too much about names not travelling well. For example, James doesn't work well in most of Europe.

SoupDragon · 31/10/2008 19:23

"We're keeping it a secret from everyone we know"

But you are telling a large number of people you don't know

Love Niamh. Who cares if it "travels well"? Most people will be able to say it even if they can't work it out from the spelling.

LittleMonkeysMummy · 31/10/2008 19:28

I love it. As for the comment about her initials being N E R, I just hope your surname doesn't start with a D!!

blackhawk · 31/10/2008 19:40

No, not a last name beginning with D! lol

SoupDragon - very true, but I'm rubbish at keeping secrets so had to tell somebody! ;)

Plonker · 31/10/2008 20:02

Beautiful. Love it

minkersmum · 02/11/2008 22:54

my friend has a daughter called niamh, lives in rural france and goes to french school, no one struggles with her name.

beautiful name i love it. great choice!

Nancy66 · 03/11/2008 06:34

I really don't like the irish names and their daft spellings (and I AM Irish!) I sort of understand why the Yanks have turned it into Neve - just saves a lot of hassle.

Elizabeth Rose is lovely though - very delicate and feminine.

BouncingTurtle · 03/11/2008 06:52

I like Niamh. I think you stick to the name you chose.

There are 3 possible spellings of my name which is a fairly simple name. And my surname is the most common version of that particular surname - yet I still have to spell out both!!

BouncingTurtle · 03/11/2008 06:52

you should stick, I mean!

conkertree · 03/11/2008 15:27

I love it - I'm in Scotland and I think its around enough for most people to know it - and as you say say - you can have trouble with the simplest names so you might as well go for something really pretty.

Would love to have it on our list for a girl, but dh's ex called her daughter it, so not sure its an option.
