I posted a while back as was struggling trying to find an Arabic girls name with good meaning, that worked well in English and Arabic. Oh and was simple enough to go with a very long surname!
You came up with some V. good suggestions but
DH and I couldnt agree, and with 2 days til D-Day we're still stuck!
We've got 2 (3) now, but not 100% sure about either...opinions please

Lana - said Laa-na
Lana' - said Lan-a (different names with different meaning...I prefer one, hubby the other - not suprises there then!)
Aiya - said I-ya

Oh if you have any other suggestions please feel free.

How about Sara/h?

Hebrew/biblical in origin, meaning princess, but also a recognised name in most languages too - including Arabic - and a 'normal name' in the UK into the bargain as well.

UmSami · 29/10/2008 23:16

Thanks mags...it's a lovely name and I told my mum at the age of about 7 that I was going to call my daughter Sarah...then I got a dog, a much loved dog, and called her Sarah...mum said I wouldn't be able to call my daughter Sarah, I insisted I would...Mum was right

I had a Muslim friend from Syria, she had a little girl around the time I had mine and she called her Tala. Forgotten what it means but I love it. And little Tala was soooo sweet

BabyBaby123 · 31/10/2008 10:23

Thank you UmSami - I will run some of those by dp and see what response i get, normally it's a flat 'no' but hopefully we will get one we agree on by the time baby arrives - or it may be a boy - which for some reason we are finding easier to find names for!

Are you still with us?

UmSami · 31/10/2008 21:45

Jessia...I love that name too...DH - he said no! Think its meaning steams from the rythmical way in which the Quran is recited ... I THINK!
BabyBaby123...your conversations with DH sound just like mine LOL...Good Luck...
and yes boys are easier! Don't know why though!
Oh and in case you didn't gather...still here, still growing...no Halloween baby Aila for me! LOL

I was wondering this too

sammysamsam · 22/12/2008 16:43

I've enjoyed reading this thread...umsami- would love to know what you called baby in the end... err..im guessing, after all the deliberation and hard thinking, it's none of the names above!well, that's sods law for ya

BabyBaby123 · 22/12/2008 19:17

i am 22 weeks now and still struggling with an Arabic girls name!! Have one I love but dp seems to be going off it will have to go through this thread again!

oldkingcolewasaMOS · 25/12/2008 15:21

hi to anyone still reading this thread. I've just discovered it and can announce on behalf of UmSami that her little girl was finally called.......
Ayah. A beautiful name for a beautiful little girl.
BabyBaby123, here is another name for you, I'm 31 weeks pregnant and we wanted an arabic name (also live in Saudi although DH an I both british) we loved the name Kalila, meaning dearly loved. Sadly it seesm we won't get to use it as we think this one is a boy (won't be Mohammed) so feel free to have our name! Good luck.

UmSami · 05/01/2009 10:10

Hi all, I'm so sorry I've been away for so long...had internet access issues and well, just not had much chance to get on line...
Thanks oldkingcole! you're right, she did end up being Ayah (How are you? I promise I'll get round to pics...and thank you for the lovely gifts...I'll get around to an e-mail soon too! Insha'Allah!)
Ayah Mariam...was nameless for nearly 2 weeks bless her, hubby immediately said Ayah, but I just couldn't get to terms with it...much to his disgust, as he had announced it on FB! In the end I couldn't think of a name that was more her! After 2 weeks of secretly calling her Ayah I figured I'd better let the rest of the world call her Ayah too!
She's gorgeous by the way! No bias...
OKC, didn't realise you wanted an arabic name...got loads of ideas, that are less 'used' than Mohammed, if you're still thinking that way... Zaki's a favourite and works quite well in UK too.
Thanks to you all for all the help over the weeks

that's a lovely name UmSami - I bet she's gorgeous! Congratulations x

vess · 05/01/2009 12:22

Congratulations!

I was just going to suggest Haya... but Ayah is beautiful anyway!

mumoverseas · 08/01/2009 08:50

Hi Umsami, I'm back in KSA now and back to my 'normal' name.
Saw the consultant at Kingdom on Tuesday and am booked for CS on 8th Feb! one month to go!
we just really liked that name for a girl but not sure I like any of the male arabic names. Definitely not a Hum'd or Ali!
Look forward to catching up for a starbucks when you feel up to escaping.
BTW, did you shipping ever turn up???????

Liya03 · 27/10/2023 09:08

I wonder what you ended up going with? I have a daughter called Aliya but I also loved the name Laila/Ayla/Amira but husband wasn’t having it! If I have a boy I’d go with Sami which I see you have too!

theduchessofspork · 27/10/2023 22:07

Lana as Laa-nuh is nice, and it’s the way it would be automatically produced here. There are a lot of similar names about - Lola, Leila, Lena, Luna, Lara, Leah - if that bothers you

Maryam - such a lovely name
Celina
Farah
Zara - popular right now
Hannah
Nadia
