I posted a while back as was struggling trying to find an Arabic girls name with good meaning, that worked well in English and Arabic. Oh and was simple enough to go with a very long surname!
You came up with some V. good suggestions but
DH and I couldnt agree, and with 2 days til D-Day we're still stuck!
We've got 2 (3) now, but not 100% sure about either...opinions please

Lana - said Laa-na
Lana' - said Lan-a (different names with different meaning...I prefer one, hubby the other - not suprises there then!)
Aiya - said I-ya

Oh if you have any other suggestions please feel free.

Amber, Naimah, Zahra, Zaina, Yasmin, Noor?

slim22 · 28/10/2008 10:42

I know a Saudi Lara. Then again maybe it is short for something? I can't find a meaning.

hey Cote, we read the same books!!!
I know lots of Alias in Morocco and jordan.

I forgot to menntion on of my favorites is Lamia. That was DS's choice. He sometimes actually calls his sister Lamia May.

CoteDAzur you make me laugh!
I had the same concern about Lana, but have been reassured that there are many Laa-na's and La-na's...the meaning I found on-line was 'kind and good natured' but not sure which name that applies too, obviously they are different in arabic but as it was a UK muslim site, and I don't read arabic well, I'm stuck!
The only Lara I can think of is Croft, and I'm not sure thats an image I want associated with my daughter
Noor/nora are popular and Beautiful in Arabic, but in english keep thinking Last of the Summer Wine...just can't!
Amber, Lamia nice but DESTROYED in english...this is an issue for me as my VERY simple name is destroyed when the I becomes eeeeeeee?! Its SOOOO annoying, especially as very similar word in english language said in the same way...but people keep trying to make my name sound MORE exotic
List so far ... Aila, Ayah, Lana, Alia (new addition) I'm getting more confused instead of less! Maybe I should put all names in hat and let DS choose!

Amira is easy to pronounce in just about any language (just to add to the confusion of "A" names)

slim22 · 28/10/2008 17:06

or Amina

georgiemum · 28/10/2008 17:09

Just being nosey.... why do you want a name that works in both? Is it to fit into 2 cultures? I know people who are 2nd generation with first and surnames that are 'exotoc' and are driven mad be people assuming that they can't speak english, or ask when they arrived here.

Baby arrived yet?

artichokes · 28/10/2008 17:13

Miriam
Nora
Amira

I love all 3 of these

loler · 28/10/2008 17:47

I know a baby mari short for miriam - that's cute.

I still think Aila is the nicest of the names mentioned. I've never heard it before but has a familiarity to it, not sure why. Maybe because spoken it's not a million miles from Isla.

Hope you don't get stuck in a snow drift on the way to hospital!

BabyBaby123 · 28/10/2008 18:09

is Aila Arabic? I can only find it listed as Scottish which is weird We need an Arabic girls name too!

superfrenchie1 · 28/10/2008 18:12

I like almost all the names mentioned but really loving Aila for your dd. it's beautiful. fwiw i've known a greek lana, an english lana, an italian lara & two english laras (by english i mean both parents english as far as i know, can't find a better way to put that, no exotic ancestry, you know what i mean), so i guess those names are neither special nor specially Muslim to me.

Aila is like Aiya - but better!!!

Also have always liked Laila

really good luck! don't worry about ds he will come around! xx

UmSami · 28/10/2008 23:39

georgiemum, feel free to be nosey!
I'm english, english...but converted to Islam about 10 years ago...I changed my name then...It always confused people 'exotic' first name and very english surname...and meeting people at uni then job interviews was highly entertaining!
Anyhoo I kept my Maiden name 'til ds was born as hubbies is just v. long...and even then I continued to work with maiden name.
My husband is Egyptian, but born and mostly raised in UK...
Anyhoo, as I've had names ranging from normal to tongue twister I've seen the impact that both have...
We already joke that our kids will need extra time in exams just to write name, so why complicate things further for them...it's annoying starting every conversation spelling your name.
Also as kids are going to be raised between both cultures we feel its important for them to have names that work in both. On the proviso that the name has a good meaning.
TMI? Sorry you asked
As for a snow storm...that would be nice...DH working in Saudi right now so sand storm is more like it...
Thank you all for lovely suggestions and support...I'm still hoping that all will become clearer when we meet the little munchkin!
Babybaby123 Aila was suggested to me by SIL, it is the name of one of her Saudi friends...weren't sure of meaning, but have heard of a few in KSA. Cousin IL's wife is Saudi and she thought name meant 'deer'. Then CoteDAzur came along and clarified things! ...I've got loads of suggestions that my grumpy hubby has said no to (but everyone else loves) let me know if you need ideas...feel like i've been doing this for ever! Congrats on your pregnancy, when you due?

Thanks UmSami - Are you still with us?? I'm not due til April so lots of time to go over and over names for me! But finding it quite difficult - very few we both like - dp doesn't like Leila and isn't overly keen on Amber, both of which we like. Said no to Aila too last night....
So any suggestions welcome!
Good Luck with the birth xx
