Really can't decide on a name for our overdue baby girl... can't decide between Alicia, Alissa, Lilia, Isabella, Tabitha or Alexa.. In fact think thats maybe why she's refusing to come out!
Want something pretty, a little different, but not out there ie apple; and not something overused or chavvy. English sounding too.
Opinions be soo welcome, or rating suggested names?
Anything..

Thans so much.

Given your own criteria, I'd go for Alice. It's the most classic version of Alyssa etc..

Isabella is very popular at the moment. It's pretty, but it's a mouthful. Annabel or Annabella prettier less used alternatives imo.

Alexa or 'Lexie' could be just a tiny bit the opposite of posh. If I were you, I'd put Alexandra on the birth cert and then nn her Alexa.

This is just personal taste of course, but Tabitha is a horrible name. Makes me think of witches and cats. I suppose it could be Beth for short though. That's all it has going for it.

Liffey · 23/10/2008 19:50

CountessD, I agree, Beatrix is a fabulous name.

I forgot Lila. This is ok. Too soft. Leila would be my prefered spelling, and that is very pretty, but I prefer names with a bit of back bone. IYSWIM.

PS, KateF, nice names, they 'fit in' and stand apart at the same time. They aren't typical for this generation.

KateF · 23/10/2008 19:53

I thank you . None of them share a name with anyone at school so far.

LissyD · 23/10/2008 20:08

My name is Alicia, and it's casued me no end of trouble as I have a lisp, and people think I'm called alithia. Even though that's not a name.

I wanted to call my dd Isabella, but it ended up as a middle name due to Isabella Linton out of Wuthering heights being so annoying.

LuLuBai · 23/10/2008 20:22

Wow - I'm always amazed by the extreme differences in peoples name preferences. I think Tabitha is gorgeous (it would be in my top 5 if it weren't already snaffled up by good friends).

Just goes to show - ignore MN. Pick a name you love. Whatever you pick, half the people will hate it anyway and the other half will adore it.

She will grow into her name and personify it to those who know her.

Rindercella · 23/10/2008 20:50

I think all of the names you are considering are nice. But just to throw one more into the pot, which is quite unusual (but perhaps not very English), how about Abitheah? Egyptian origins I think. Very unusual, not at all common (in terms of usage), can be shortened to Abi, and is very pretty imo.

Anyway, Lulu is quite right in what she says, whatever name you pick half the people will love it, half will hate it. As long as you love it, that's all that matters. Good luck.

ok well, I know 2 little Alicia both of whom pronounce it "aleesha" so, you may have confusion there? aside from that I like it, especially if you are planning on pronouncing it properly lol

Alissa and Lilia are both lovely.

Isabella pretty widespread these days, so if you want something a bit less in use then maybe not?

Tabitha is loveyl

not so keen on Alexa, although don't "dislike" it per se

Tabitha would be my choice from you list but all are lovely

Lizzylou · 23/10/2008 21:36

I know an absolutely rancid Alicia, so that would be a no.

slayerette · 23/10/2008 21:37

Alyssa rather than Alissa, surely?

ravenAK · 23/10/2008 21:38

Dd1 is Alicia. I love it, but do have to correct pronunciation quite regularly.

MadBadandWieldingAnAxe · 23/10/2008 22:46

From your list, I like Tabitha best. I like Alice and Beatrix even more.

Plonker · 23/10/2008 22:51

Alicia - not keen, but only because of personal association
Alissa - ok
Lilia - as previously said, this does unfortunately sound like a tampon. sorry.
Isabella - beautiful, but doesn't fit your criteria of being a little 'different'
Tabitha - my favourite on your list. lovely ...and a little bit different (i have heard of a few on here, but haven't heard of any in RL)
Alexa - much prefer Alexandra with the nn Alexa

Good luck

LynetteScavo · 23/10/2008 22:53

Isabella.

DeadTall · 23/10/2008 23:09

Definitely Isabella - pretty, classic, and she can shorten when she gets older if she hates it!

Mind you I'm biased as my middle name is Isabella - I always wanted to be called Izzy as I thought it much cooler than my real first name.

Tabitha sounds like a cat's name to me and yes, Lilia is definitely a tampon.

I'd also avoid any unusual spellings... I've seen so many children struggle at school with spelling their own names - why do some people make their children go through life as a spelling mistake?!

PrincessButtercup · 23/10/2008 23:15

I like Isabella best, I think.
I love the name Liliana; might that be an alternative to Lilia?

Flum · 23/10/2008 23:20

Alexa is nice. Not mad on the others.

Pinkjenny · 24/10/2008 09:11

Bubba - they call her Alexia, Alexi, Alexis, it drives me mad!

lula1 · 24/10/2008 09:17

Thank you so much for your opinions.. it helps to see peoples associations. Tabitha seems a love it or hate it. Almost everyone loves isabella, hense its popularity., Alicia and Alissa mildly pop, though seem more of them in the south.
Last night we came up with the other variant of Alissa, been Elissa, thought sounded more classic and also can shorten to Ella.. Thought Elissa Lilly (Ella) not sure where came from, think is another variant of Alice originally... ok I'm gonna have to goggle it now... Elissa Lilly anyone?

OP posts:
JulesJules · 24/10/2008 09:24

I like Alyssa. It's Greek, very pretty.
Elissa is a modern variant of Alyssa I think. I like it, but I think she will be forever spelling it for people.

Pinkjenny · 24/10/2008 09:26

It's a bit heavy on the L's. Not sure if I prefer Alyssa, which just sounds the same, doesn't it?

I do like Alyssa though. I really like Ella too.

When are you due? We came up with a final shortlist of four the night before dd was born, after being totally unable to agree for the whole pregnancy!

On the Lexie thing (being, what did someone call it - the opposite end of posh? Charming.), we do call dd Lexie occasionally, but she definitely suits Alexa more. And there is another Lexie at her nursery, although she isn't Alexa. She has a very famous daddy...

lula1 · 24/10/2008 09:40

Yeah I think Alexa is classy too, just depends on how you hear it in your head, Isabella is so classy, DH loves it, but I prefer Isabel purely because when I hear it, I hear it in a Vicky Pollard voice, like IsaBELLARR!
Am overdue by a week, have induction booked for Halloween, so maybe it should be Tabitha! Funny thing about Tabitha is its originally a bible name, but people assoc with B Potter, yet you don't hear people saying oh no not Tom because of Tom Cat or not Thomas too much like a tank engine..but I suppose we can't help how we associate and I am asking opinions too..Just wish I could feel 100% with anything!
Elissa rather than Alissa is purely for the nickname of Ella, gives her choice.

OP posts:
Pinkjenny · 24/10/2008 09:42

Oooh, let us know what you choose! I love everything you have come up with, so I'm no help!

loler · 24/10/2008 09:52

Tabitha is lovely but a bit of a mouthful - would you shorten it?

Elissa sounds a bit made up to me, if you like Ella why not just use Ella? The spelling it for everyone is not too much of an issue, I have to spell both my names and most of my address for everyone. I just do it automatically know at least Elissa isn't too long to spell!

A beatrix has just started ds nursery - her nn is bertie which I think is really cute.
