Lowena is a real name, in fact it's my name. It is a Cornish name and it means "joy and happiness" for those of you unsure about the pronunciation it is pronounced loh-weh-nah, not loh-wee-nah. I think it's a pretty name and it's very unusual, I have never met anyone else called Lowena. It is a name that takes strength of character as no-one seems to be able to say it or spell it!!! Two of my uncles still aren't sure of my name, one spells it with two n's and the other can't say it. I often just introduce myself as Wena as it is easier and it is a nick name I've had since childhood as my younger brother couldn't pronounce it when he was learning to speak.

Topsy reminds me of Topsy & Tim books, but also topsy-turvy. Don't know, to me it is rather more an adjective than a name IYSWIM - I know that some names are just that - adjectives, but topsy doesn't seem right.

Lutina - ok, but don't love it, seems a little contrived. How about Lumen? There was a character on the last series of Dexter called that, and I thought it quite pretty.
Lowena - too much like Morwena for me, which I find a bit witchy.
Dulcie - reminds me of dulce de leche.
Bridie - feels like a misspelling of birdie.

Your longer list I feel has more potential.

Lucy - pretty - it's on my list but other names come higher up.
Heidi - pretty also, but Kerry Katona has a daughter called Heidi and I can't bring myself to like it.
Judy - not keen, too 1950s for me.
Fallon - character from Dynasty I think? Or was it Dallas.
Claudia - best name by a mile. My No.1 pick for a girl!
Gloria,Clara and Portia - not fussed on these sorry.

Erm, I think the op will already have chosen a name for her THREE YEAR OLD!! Grin

QueenVictoria42 · 22/10/2011 21:13

oh bloomin' nora. who unearths these old threads? Oh well that'll teach me to check the dates in future!

spottyock · 22/10/2011 22:30

Topsy's cute but maybe as a nn.

I like Dulcie. Bridie was the name I used to use on nights out! Not many people had heard of it; I always had to spell it...unless they were Irish.

Haha- that's the second old thread I've commented on in as many days. Perhaps I should check the dates before commenting... Do we know what op called her dc in the end?

selte · 24/10/2011 12:01

Bridie is a type of savoury pastry up in Scotland, if that helps at all. If she was ever up here it would probably get a giggle.

GooseyLoosey · 24/10/2011 12:11

Like Dulcie, none of the others.

MamaLazarou · 24/10/2011 14:48

I like Topsy and Bridie. Dulcie's a bit too puddingy. The other two just sound silly.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 24/10/2011 14:52

Bridie is from Bridget isn't it?

YaMaYaMa · 24/10/2011 14:57

It's a 3 year old thread Sad

I want to know what OP went for.

MamaLazarou · 24/10/2011 15:00

Bah! Why do people DO that?

SucksToBeMe · 24/10/2011 15:03

Dulcie=Dulce. Which means 'Sweet' in spanish. I like think thats nice.

YaMaYaMa · 24/10/2011 15:04

I know Confused

Worst case scenario here is that OP had child, she had big floppy ears and she called her topsy anyway.

BookNerd · 24/10/2011 15:11

Weren't there some Topsy and Tim children's books ages ago? That might cause some ribbing?

MamaLazarou · 24/10/2011 15:21

I don't see why it should be a problem to have the same name as a character in a book. We'd have very few names to choose from if we avoided all names of characters in books!

minervaitalica · 24/10/2011 15:30

I know a (Cornish) Lowenna too - it's a strong name - I quite like it but she struggles with spelling, so if that bothers you avoid it. It's not as bad as my husband's name (Cornish name, the only one on Facebook with that name at the moment).

No the others! too "sweet" for me sorry

slapmeonthepatio · 24/10/2011 21:03

I rather like Topsy. DH (very traditional tastes, usually) suggested this for DD2, much to my surprise.

And I very much like Bridie.

sleepevader · 25/10/2011 07:31

Lowena is lovely but I would spell it lowenna.

Dulcie/ dulce are lovely too. Know a very nice dulce in real life.

How about darcie if you like dulcie?

Claudia is a good choice too.

sleepevader · 25/10/2011 07:32

Ffs missed that it's an old thread! How do you manage to unearth these!

FellatioNelson · 25/10/2011 07:37

I don't mind Dulcie or Bridie (don't especially like them either, though) but the others are just horrid. Sorry.

FellatioNelson · 25/10/2011 07:39

Oh. Hang on. Is Lowena pronounced Low-eena or Low-enna? Low-enna I could grow to like. Low-ena is horrid. Grin
