We both love Ruby... but is it too common now?

And what about Lola? .. And which is better?!

I always see Ruby as a 68 yr old!

LuLuBai · 05/11/2008 11:20

I had planned to abbreviate DDs name to Lola but several friends named their daughters (on birth certificates) Lola before I got round to it. I love it, and the prostitute, transvestite, showgirl connotations don't bother me at all.

I haven't met many little Rubys although I sat next to one in a restaurant with her family the other day. Her sister was called Poppy and they both had flaming red hair. I guess if they have another girl she will be Scarlett.

CuppaTeaJanice · 05/11/2008 12:29

Lola reminds me of that Kinks song.

Ruby is nice but there are loads of them around so she'd probably get called by a nickname or surname at school.

How about Sapphire or Jade if you like gemstone names?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 05/11/2008 13:09

Every baby group and pre-school around here (sarf London) seems to have at least one Ruby and at least one Lola. They're nice names but ubiquitous.

I think the pendulum has swung so far that if you want to buck the trend, you should call your daughter Jane or Anne (names of my vintage which seem to have fallen completely out of use)!

LuLuBai · 05/11/2008 13:14

MadBad - those names will come back. Give it a bit more time. I reckon our children will be using Jane, Anne and Susan. People like to name their children after grandmothers and great grandmothers. Hence the current obsession with Rose, Edith, Martha, Florence etc (all of whom are ancestors of mine btw).

mabanana · 05/11/2008 13:16

I think Susan is lovely. Traditional, pretty, like Suzy as a short form. I predict a revival.

LuLuBai · 05/11/2008 13:16

Oh and I have an Anne and a Susan up the family tree too but the next generation down. So my daughter will probably revive their names....

MadreInglese · 05/11/2008 13:17

I know sisters called Ruby and Lola

Both lovely names I think but VERY popular atm

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 05/11/2008 13:26

Lulu - Yes, I think that's the irony. Here we are are, struggling to find original names for our children, only to find that there are four Parthenopes in the school, whereas if we'd called her Susan she'd have been the only one!

moyasmum · 05/11/2008 13:28

i like Ruby, its very pretty and ive never met a horrid one ,however just avoid the top 10 names because they are sooo repetative ,no matter how pretty.

Think of the nicest girl you knew of in school, what was she called? 10 to1 it wont be common and you will be very pro it.
Gillian was the nicest girl i knew at school go for that!

RubysTheBoss · 05/11/2008 13:52

I have a Ruby, who is 4. She has just started school, and is the only Ruby there. In fact, whn we named her it was an uncommon name, and many hinted that it was an old ladys name . It has become more common now, although I still don't personally know another. Lola is also a lovely name, and would be my first choice if I had another little girl. .

rusmum · 05/11/2008 13:58

I have A RUBY who is 4.5. when i picked it i didnt know of any. then thanks i think to kaiser cheifs there are loads. DD2 13 weeks is called Rose, i dont know of many at the mo but who knows???

Go with what you like, i still love Ruby, despite there being lots

LuLuBai · 05/11/2008 14:21

Tricky isn't it. I know a couple who chose Tallulah thinking it was pretty and rather original. When she got to nursery there were 3 others!!!

RubysTheBoss · 05/11/2008 14:39

rusmum
My Ruby was born 4.7.2004, when was yours?
I know what you mean about the Kaiser Cheifs, but dd thinks the song is all about her, so all is well! .
Glad, too, that we named her that. Tho my ds, who is 6yo, is called Max, and apparently there is a kids programme called 'Max n Ruby', about 2 rabbits, so everyone thinks we named them after that!!

rusmum · 05/11/2008 14:41

rubytheboss My Ru born 20.5.04 .
I always feel when i am telling her off i sund like kaiser chiefs, ruby, ruby....

i know about max and ruby. If dd2 had been a boy was going to be max LOL

We have such good taste!!!

BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 17:25

In East London every 4th girl seems to be named Ruby

BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 17:27

You could name her Luella or Louise and call her Lola?

We have ruby as our girls name for beany.... it was the only girls name we both liked... goes with the middle name we will be using for a girl, and the only other girls name we have liked is now DD's name. However popular it is i haven't heard of one round here yet.... and we didn't know how popular it was until after we'd decided on it.... only 12 days till we find out the sex too, so i'm kinda set on the name... Though hopefully my instincts are right and its a boy, my boys name is lurvley, and i sooooo wanna use it!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 16/11/2008 18:13

Rubystheboss and Rusmum- when we told DS we were going to have a new baby he said it would be twins and we'd call them Max and Ruby!!

Funny thing is My sister is also pregnant and had she been having a boy she'd have called him Max, and if i have a girl will be Ruby... how strange!! Tho sis is having a girl.

GColdtimer · 16/11/2008 19:42

Depends on what you mean by "too" common I suppose. My niece is Ruby and she is the only one I know. My DD is Grace and again, the only one I have met. I have also never met an Emily despite it being the most popular name for about 5 years running!

Not sure that helps really, apart from to say its pot luck really. I wouldn't have thought Oliver was that popular yet 3 out of the 5 boys in my post natal group share that name.

I think you just have to think about what you like tbh.

BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 20:13

I named my DD Olivia and found out a week later it was the most common name in Britain. Wish I had done some research first!

BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 20:15

Every time I go to a beach or shopping mall I just hear people screaming Olivia!

luckywinner · 16/11/2008 20:21

I have a Ruby and I absolutely love it and don't care if there are hundreds around. Every time I call her name I love the way it sounds. We don't have any round here and I am in West London. I think all the popular girls names are lovely and sometimes that makes them all the more classic. If you love it, you choose it. But damn those Kaiser chiefs

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 16/11/2008 20:26

tis popular, but lovely name
