What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Indiana (Indy) if I had a girl but doubtful it will ever happen so have given the name to one of my cats instead!

Gabriel but dp refuses to even consider it!

hayleybootes · 05/02/2009 21:35

I love Scarlett but can't have it as our surname's Bootes!! Grr!!

ohdearwhatamess · 05/02/2009 21:43

Christopher

laumiere · 05/02/2009 22:27

Christian or Ianto for a boy (DH is Welsh and nixed Ianto as it's used in the Welsh equivalent of 'Paddy walks into a bar' jokes.

Also like Ieuan but think it's unfair not living in Wales....

For a girl I love Ophelia too, or Calliope. Unfortunately our surname is Robson, which doesn't really work.

ruddynorah · 05/02/2009 22:37

mabel

dh says no way..due to auntie mabel.

blueshoes · 05/02/2009 22:44

yes, Ophelia is nice, but shame about the air of tragedy.

For a boy, Tarquin - my first childhood crush.

CJCregg · 05/02/2009 22:52

Hero (for a girl), also after Georgette Heyer novel and (oops) Shakespeare. DH vetoed, even as a middle name.

DP had a yen for....

Oberon or Auberon

lovely, classic, Shakespearean. Til I pointed out that being called King of the Fairies in the playground might result in hatred and therapy.

S1ur · 07/02/2009 20:40

Though in reality what kind of a PONCETASTIC school yard would that be???

lunamoon2 · 07/02/2009 23:21

October Red-absolutely love this but an absolute no no.
Also liked Anastasia, Gabriel and Ralph (pronounce Raif)work colleagues couldn't hide their amusement when the latter was mentioned.
Think it is a male thin about Gabriel as my oh vetoed it straight away.

lisalisa · 07/02/2009 23:37

I loved teh name Atlanta Lace at university where I met a beautiful girl from USA ( not atlanta ) with long blonde hair and green eyes who was bascialy everything i wasn't in the looks dept .

When I was pregnant with frist dd I tenatively mentioned to dh who said something akin to "over my dead body will you call her lace curtians" at wchih point the subject was dropped!

Woby · 15/02/2009 21:13

Hero, Savannah or Tamar for a girl.
Milo for a boy.

RachePache · 15/02/2009 21:20

I've always loved Gilbert (yes, another AofGG fan) - but it wouldn't go with existing DCs's names.

Thunderduck · 16/02/2009 11:49

Darwin. Dp loves it too, so when we become parents we might still consider it. Poor kid.

lastboxoftampons · 16/02/2009 12:51

Joaquin for a boy. I just like the sound of it, and I actually am a bit Spanish, just don't think we're brave enough to pull it off!

roseability · 16/02/2009 21:55

Ophelia
