What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Lolita

Always loved it!

Sidge · 04/10/2008 21:30

I wanted Octavia but DH said no as it's too poncey. I still love it though and am trying to persuade my friend to use it!

hotCheeseBurns · 04/10/2008 21:30

Julian.

Apparently it'd be cruel to call a child this

MrsMattie · 04/10/2008 21:31

Loads of the really strong biblical ones e.g. Moses, Ezekiel.

MrsMattie · 04/10/2008 21:31

p.s. I am an atheist!

TheBlonde · 04/10/2008 21:32

Frank - DH hates it

ivykaty44 · 04/10/2008 21:32

Ramona, when I told my dd that is what I would have loved to call her she was as she says she would have loved that name - would suit her aswell and be much more unusual

RubySlippers · 04/10/2008 21:32

Noah - DH hates it

Lola - DH hates it

No1GruffaloHunter · 04/10/2008 21:32

Athur...although hardly a secret and vetoed by DH...also academic as it looks like we're fated to have lovely girls.

WinkyWinkola · 04/10/2008 21:32

I love Julian too but it's the name of a significant ex.

Imagine if it got back to him I'd called my DS Julian. He'd assume I was still in love with him.

Soapbox · 04/10/2008 21:33

Cornelias

No1GruffaloHunter · 04/10/2008 21:33

Thats Arthur...really can't spell tonight.

Bluebutterfly · 04/10/2008 21:33

Alathea. Dh thinks it is too pretentious .

schwotz · 04/10/2008 21:34

Roger

its sounds so mature

LackaDAISYcal · 04/10/2008 21:34

Rufus....DH says it's a dog's name

Maisie....again vetoed by DH.

Cantandwont · 04/10/2008 21:34

Clementine, Ursula, Arthur, Felix - apparently all "cruel"

ShinyPinkShoes · 04/10/2008 21:35

Tallulah

Moomin · 04/10/2008 21:35

I think Silas is a little bit close to 'silage' and also can't help thinking of silas marner so it has tragic connotations. Know what you mean though.

I loved Gabriel or Scarlett but didn't quite have enough conviction to carry it through. Love hearing when other people have used them though. makes me feel strangely !

littlelamb · 04/10/2008 21:35

Carrie. My surname would make it too too cruel.

EyeballsintheSky · 04/10/2008 21:35

Octavia, Ophelia, Lysander, Lucien, Demelza

StrangeTown · 04/10/2008 21:35

Genevieve ( not sure if that's even how you spell it)

Adair

Jesse for boy (think you can only get away with this is US)

WinkyWinkola · 04/10/2008 21:36

Clementine is lovely.

angrypixie · 04/10/2008 21:37

I wanted Noah or Gabriel for a boy both vetoed as 'cruel'

Benedict, I went off it when one told me that he had lived with Bendy Dick as a nickname throughout school.

Tilly and Ellie I love them both but wouldn't use them when I realized that I was really childish and couldn't help rhyming them as Silly-Tilly and Smelly-Ellie

hotCheeseBurns · 04/10/2008 21:37

I agree with Ophelia, it's so pretty but what would it be shortened to? Phil? Not so nice.
