What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Sebastian, Julian and Benedict for boys. DH vetoed, but I'm not sure his efforts (Zeus and Thor) were any better.

Tarantella · 05/10/2008 09:07

Nine Dragons, I won that one, but DH then had to be allowed to veto Torquil for DS!

chequers · 05/10/2008 09:24

Matilda, but DH has vetoed it.

noddyholder · 05/10/2008 09:26

Bloody hell you lot better avoid brighton Cruelty and inappropriate naming in abundance here!

Elvis (DH went )

Umlellala · 05/10/2008 09:36

Tinkerbelle's mum, dh's colleague has told everyone at his work that ds's name is from Star Trek (Skyler. It isn't) . We liked Dax though...

For me, I love biblical names but am not religious so wouldn't choose them.

And I LOVE some Irish names - Aithne, Caoimhe (think those are right spellings...) but we have no Irish connection whatsoever.

noddyholder · 05/10/2008 09:37

Elvis was in my final 2 I still love it and it would have suited ds but am still happy with the choice we made

ClosedForCleaning · 05/10/2008 09:52

Lucifer - of course it couldn't be used, but seems such a waste of a beautiful sounding name.

Twelvelegs · 05/10/2008 09:55

I really like Somerset for a boy, but frea it would be shortened to Somer and would sound too dreadful to call accross a park!!

Twelvelegs · 05/10/2008 09:55

fear, not frea

Turniphead1 · 05/10/2008 10:07

I love Sorrell and nature type names - but we opted to go down the Irish route instead

TinkerBellesMum · 05/10/2008 10:08

Actually Jadzia is on my list

There was someone in Birmingham a few years ago that was stopped from giving their child Beelzebub, they couldn't see the problem! Apparently the Chinese name their children by combining their names and a registrar had to stop Sa and Tan from doing that with their names (could have the names wrong, I'm not up with Chinese names, but it's the point of what their names made that's important).

Love the name Douglas for a boy but I would be worried the kids would be doomed for life.

frazzledoldbag34 · 05/10/2008 10:10

Topaz
Lola
Tallulah

DH says 'NO'.
Boo

MegSophandEmma · 05/10/2008 10:10

Kid not Kids

binkythebullet · 05/10/2008 10:12

I love Douglas (and Dougal), although I think you need to live in Scotland to get away with those

cafebistro · 05/10/2008 10:13

I love Oscar, Reuben and Eden for boys- DP wouldnt let me use any of them

I also really like Tilly but it would just sound ridiculous with DP's surname.

noddyholder · 05/10/2008 10:14

A friends brother is called douglas and is gorge but everyone calls him drugless

hotCheeseBurns · 05/10/2008 10:14

Devon was number one on my list of names for ds. Still a bit sad I was convinced not to use it.

Seth and Jude are lovely too.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 05/10/2008 10:37

I really liked Aurora when I was pregnant but DH didn't like it.

devonsmummy · 05/10/2008 12:46

Evan - can't get away with this as DS is Devon
Ellis - sounds silly with surname
Darby - sounds like an obsession with place names Devon & Darby
Dexter - DH vetoed - boohoo

pramspotter · 05/10/2008 13:23

Abrahm

StrangeTown · 05/10/2008 13:26

DH was obsessed with Elvis for DS. Everyone for miles around kept sending cards to 'Baby Elvis' like the Royle Family took me ages to put a stop to it.

I also really like Quintus but I would have to have another 4 DS's...

smartiejake · 05/10/2008 13:39

Phoebe- but not good with our monosylabic surname that starts with "Bee" sound.(poor child would have ended up with a stutter.)
