thoughts on Twyla?

Still can't decide on a girl's name, but we keep circling back to Twyla (meaning "woven of two cords" or "twilight", depending on where you look...). Any thoughts? Have you ever known a Twyla or Twila? What sort of nicknames do you think it might generate?

I don't know any children with this name, but I would think it weas made up by the parents, sorry
Makes me think nicknames would be toilettes etc

babster · 02/10/2008 14:42

It's the name of the cat in one of the Barbie movies (12 Dancing Princesses maybe?). Unfortunately in this house dd's Twyla toy goes by the nickname of Toilet. Sorry, this probably isn't what you wanted to hear!

Tommy · 02/10/2008 14:42

agree with eachpeach I'm afraid

Fimbo · 02/10/2008 14:42

Agree with EPPM. Sounds very like Twyfords.

CaptainKarvol · 02/10/2008 14:44

Its the name of a particularly irritating little girl in a Terry Pratchett book (who lisps and mispronounces things for 'cute' effect), so on that basis alone, NO. It's a nice meaning though.

Botbot · 02/10/2008 14:50

Makes me think of slightly wanky contemporary dance.

Twyla Tharp

WendyWeber · 02/10/2008 14:50

nah

VictorianSqualor · 02/10/2008 14:51

Nah. Horrid.

Botbot · 02/10/2008 14:51

x-post!

WendyWeber · 02/10/2008 14:51

oh, botbot beat me to it!

She is the only one I've ever heard of & her surname is so odd the whole thing sounds like an anagram.

Ceolas · 02/10/2008 14:52

I thought the same as babster. Not for me.

artichokes · 02/10/2008 14:53

Sorry but it sounds like a name made-up by a twine company. Or a mispronounciation of Kyla by someone with a particualrly bad lisp.

theory · 02/10/2008 14:53

Thanks- it's really useful to hear people's associations with the name. I'm from NYC, where it's definitely associated with Tharp.

She "was named for Twila Thornburg, the "Pig Princess" of the 89th Annual Muncie Fair in Indiana" (am assuming the pig princess was like a beauty queen rather than a pig in a crown! )

"Tharp's family (including younger sister Twanette, twin brothers Stanley and Stanford, mother Lecile and father William" - Twanette? Lecile? Stanley and Stanford? What is wrong with these people?

theory · 02/10/2008 15:11

Now, now. There are Twanettes in this world who would find Octavia, Rupert, and Arabella just as laughable. There's nothing wrong with these people. They're just not your people, clearly.

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 02/10/2008 15:25

There are other Twanettes????

Sorry, theory, I know all about & usually defend the American liking for madeup unique names - it was the twins named, effectively, Stan & Stan that did it for me with the Tharps

EnchantedWithEdwardCullen · 02/10/2008 15:26

Soulnds like someone with a lisp trying to say 'Tyler'

theory · 02/10/2008 15:47

Wendy- I hear ya' about the double Stans! And I didn't mean to jump all over you (my response sounded a little heavier in print than I meant it to).

Seconding CaptainKarvol, the children are in Hogfather

"Gawain and Twyla, who'd been named by people who apparently loved them"

moyasmum · 02/10/2008 15:58

I knew there was a better bit to share with you:

She sighed 'Yes Twyla?'
'I'm afwaid of the monster in the cellar, Thusan. It's going to eat me up.'
Susan shut her book firmly and raised a warning finger.
'What have I told you about trying to sound ingratiatingly cute, Twyla?' she said.
The little girl said 'You said I musn't. You said that exaggerated lisping is a hanging offence and I only do it to get attention.' "
Terry Pratchett, "Hogfather"

I recommend it to you all.

PinkTulips · 02/10/2008 16:08

jonathon ross trying to say 'taylor' is the only thing that pops into my head

sorry

frazzledoldbag34 · 02/10/2008 16:33

I remember a book I read as a child with a character in it called Twyla. She was a witch, and the name always has spooky connotations now for me............although I do actually think it's pretty. Just couldn't use it myself.
