Still can't decide on a girl's name, but we keep circling back to Twyla (meaning "woven of two cords" or "twilight", depending on where you look...). Any thoughts? Have you ever known a Twyla or Twila? What sort of nicknames do you think it might generate?

I like the meaning- if she is a twin, it's a very good meaning, but as a singleton?

FreakyLadyFrightALot · 02/10/2008 21:40

don't like it at all, sorry

eviz · 02/10/2008 21:42

Twyla the Turkey Twizzler.

Perhaps that's my own bizarre word association game..

Sorry

minko · 02/10/2008 21:47

Chav.
Sorry!

TwoPumpkins · 03/10/2008 11:20

I would think you were from the Bible Belt USA

CountessDracula · 03/10/2008 11:23

Yes me too
We had a babysitter in West Virginia called Twyla who arrived with her bible

We were all falling around laughing at how terrible her name was too

cheesesarnie · 03/10/2008 11:27

TwoPumpkins · 03/10/2008 15:54
Grin
Bubbaluv · 03/10/2008 16:00

Sorry, but I can't think of it without my brain doing a stupid Beverly Hillbillie accent!

mabanana · 03/10/2008 16:03

I am very amused by the Stan and Stan twins! Rofl! Those Tharps, eh, crazy names, crazy people.

Bathsheba · 03/10/2008 16:31

I've seen it used - I'm sure there was a singer or Christian songwriter called Twila Paris - but I'm not a huge fan....

Would it be Twill-ah or T-why-la...?

purpleduck · 03/10/2008 16:51

Very at people slamming the name

I have a very good friend in Canada called Twyla. She is neither from the deep south or bible weiding, in fact she is smart, gorgeous and funny.

zippitippitoes · 03/10/2008 16:53

never heard of it

dont like it much

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 17:13

Bathsheba there is.

I love the name, have done since I first heard of Twila Paris. I'm not sure where the idea it sounds like a lisp comes from, probably people who haven't heard it said.

It's not Twilla BTW and not quite T-why-la.

Liffey · 03/10/2008 17:36

It's quite pretty. It reminds me of Freya and Maia in its style. I don't dislike it but I wouldn't choose it.

I know of one, so I know it's not made up, but I think some people would think it was made up.

Liffey · 03/10/2008 23:18

I think I just prefer Twighlight as a name. It's more substantial and you could still use Twyla as a nickname.

Bubbaluv · 04/10/2008 08:59

Purpleduck, no one has a problem with your friend!
Just because she's nice doesn't mean her name is!

TwoPumpkins · 04/10/2008 09:56

The lisp come from Terry Pratchett

I have a friend called Adolph, no one must say they dont like the name or I will be very cross because she is lovely!

MrsMattie · 04/10/2008 09:58

It sounds made up. Horrid.

TwoPumpkins · 04/10/2008 09:58

comes*

TinkerBellesMum · 04/10/2008 10:17

There's no lisp in the pronunciation of it and not everyone reads Pratchett (apparently).

Maybe it's because I've grown up with the name, but I think it's pretty.

abbaone · 04/10/2008 10:21

AWFUL !!!

lastboxoftampons · 04/10/2008 15:10

Sorry Botbot, but Twyla Tharp is anything but wanky contemporary dance! Have you ever SEEN it?

It's a lovely name - and it really suits Twyla Tharp - she's very feisty and pixie-ish

ninedragons · 05/10/2008 06:04

Sorry, I hear Duelling Banjos too when I hear it.
