We are looking for an uncommon or unusual baby boy name. We really like the name Ripley.

ScummyMummy · 22/09/2008 20:39

MrsMattie · 22/09/2008 20:43

Honest opinion - horrid.

Dragonbutter · 22/09/2008 20:43

ScummyMummy · 22/09/2008 20:50

psychopath v woman with killer alien inside her

Sorry but definite no!

minkersmum · 22/09/2008 20:52

I lke it. Know a litttle boy from our toddler called ripley. it was also my friend from schools surname.

No actually kid i know is Riley ... but both nice!!

Unusual if thats wot you're after.

mamazee · 22/09/2008 20:54

honestly ? don't like it...will prob be shortened to rip.
how unusual do you mean ?

saggyhairyarse · 22/09/2008 20:54

What about:

Rafferty?

janeite · 22/09/2008 20:55

Don't like it, sorry.

Megglevache · 22/09/2008 20:58

I think it's a girls name.

Riley is the closest one.

CuppaTeaJanice · 22/09/2008 21:00

Hasn't Ripley's Believe it or Not just opened in London? With all sorts of oddities, shrunken heads, Victorian circus freaks etc.

I wouldn't use it if he's at all...erm....unusual looking

nooka · 22/09/2008 21:14

I'd think about Ripley's believe it or not too. I would assume it was a surname. Do you have any other ideas?

ORFlip · 22/09/2008 21:52

Two other names we are considering are Hugo and Oden.

The meaning of ripley that we are drawn to is "the meadow beside a river", which is our favorite spot on our property. It has also had the meaning of "serene". Lastly, we are surfers, and Rip is a surfing term. So Ripleys believe it or not, Alien, then talented Mr Ripley are not associations we like, but people seem to understandably make. Thoughts?

mamazee · 22/09/2008 22:04

i like oden.

HonoriaGlossop · 22/09/2008 22:05

I think it depends on you - round here, a Ripley would belong to the chavvy family and would have a shaved head at pre-school age. However a little surfer boy all dressed in mini boden could probably make the name his own.

mamazee · 22/09/2008 22:09

blimey... swinging from stereotype to stereotype

Thomcat · 22/09/2008 22:10

Not keen tbh, sozza.

nooka · 22/09/2008 22:11

Prefer Odin to Oden. But of the three I like Hugo best, even though the only Hugo I knew was a bit of a Hooray Henry. I like unusual names, I just prefer names that are immediately identifiable as a first name.

mamazee · 22/09/2008 22:13

thats why i don't like hugo...smacks of posh boy.
like odin too.

PuppyMonkey · 22/09/2008 22:13

Ripley is a place near where I live. You would not want to be named after it....

fortyplus · 22/09/2008 22:20

Ripley is ghastly imo. I love Hugo but decided to give it a miss for my two sons as we don't have a country estate and can't afford to send them to Eton.

Relative just called her new baby Oscar - is that any good?

fortyplus · 22/09/2008 22:21

Someone I know gave their son the middle name Flipper. Seriously...

SlartyBartFast · 22/09/2008 22:28

how about hugh?

mamazee · 22/09/2008 22:34

ori
arlo
otto ?

MrsCurly · 22/09/2008 22:39

We know a Ripley. He is the violent one at nursery. But his parents are very cool and he'll grow out of hitting.

ORFlip · 22/09/2008 22:39

I actualy do like the name otto, but my brother named his son that.
