Kitty

Kitty is on our shortlist.
Only, though I love Kitty, I'm not sure if it is more of a nickname than a 'proper' name.
What do you think?
Neither of us LOVE Katherine which I guess is the obvious long version. Anything else that Kitty can be short for?

Kitty can be short or exchanged for any name you would like - it wasn't uncommon in the past for babies to have their names compltly changed. My great uncle Bill has sadly past away, all his life he has been Bill (after his father) but his name was Alfred.....

This is not unusual and if you state on the birth certificate one name and tell everyone that your baby will be known as Kitty that is fine, name the baby Jane and let everyone call her Kitty.

It is your call - for the first 16 years anyhow

bettybee · 19/09/2008 13:45

i think kitty is a lovely pretty name and definitly
a name in its own right. i always wanted to use that
name but dh wouldnt let me cos he is quite traditional
but i love it, it is very feminine and pretty.
i dont think its a pets name any more than any other name,
like someone else said some pets are called greg or
whatever.
i would go for it.

Raven is a wicked name! Especially if they grow up to become a goth. I would have loved to be called Raven when I was a teenager!
I'd probably feel that I'd have to have my hair dyed black though.
Kitty Rose is nice. I like the name Rose.

wot...lol....I thought you may have meant clear

The funny thing is, that ds could not get the v sound out properly in the name Ziva, but is perfectly capable to say Raven correctly, v sound and all, lol....

FairLadyRantALot · 19/09/2008 13:50

oh dear wot...you just have made a "critical" mistake, lol....you mentioned Rose as a middlename

pgwithnumber3 · 19/09/2008 14:10

Love Kitty but I think it has to be quite a girly girl, if your DD turned out to be a football strip wearing tomboy, it just wouldn't look right. Love it though. Very cute.

Yes wot, Rose is the antichrist of middle names on Mumsnet! DD2 has the name Rose as her middle name. I fear I may never be accepted into the bosom of Mumsnet because of this.

MrsMattie · 19/09/2008 14:34

It's cute, but maybe a bit too cute.

littleducks · 19/09/2008 14:39

My cousin is kitty, short for Nikita which i was extremly jealous of growing up, as it is exotic but could be shortened to Nikki or KItty

Spink · 19/09/2008 14:44

Right, well, now I'm moving back towards Kitty, as just Kitty. Isn't (pregnancy ) indecisiveness a wonderful thing?

I'm not too bothered about the girlishness of it, as Kitty could be shortened to Kit, which I also like, and is a bit more suited to football-strip wearing tomboy. After all, Kit can be a boy's name can't it?!
I also love kit-kats, which I think brings something new to the discussion. In that, I am now going to get a kit kat.

I'm sure Chrisine and Christina can also be shortened to Kitty.

But if you like Kitty, just go with that, I don't think it's especially girly, but it is pretty.

Spink · 19/09/2008 14:47

by the way littleducks, thanks for your P&T advice on the other thread! Still not made a decision there either..
Nikita is lovely but unfortunately reminds me of the film that was remade into 'Assassin' with Bridget Fonda.

Spink · 19/09/2008 15:04

have a look at this page www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl A few Kitty's as the original name, not pet name. Only with the surname Brown though

stleger · 19/09/2008 15:49

My neighbour's granddaughter is called Kitty, she is very cute. And I know a professor of English who is called Kitty. She isn't cute, but is fun!

moyasmum · 19/09/2008 15:56

really love this name.

fizzbuzz · 19/09/2008 17:08

My 2 year old dd is called this.

I actually wish I had given her another name, because I feel it is a bit....twee, and she is anything but.

I think it is very pretty, and we called her this because there is a strong Irish connection in our family, and it seems to have a lot of Irish connections to it. She was named after an Irsih friend. I used to worry about it when she was older, and agree with the fact it could be shortened to Kit.

However I loathe cats, and people seem to think I should love them because of dd's name.

Dd at 2, calls herself "Titty"

I didn't know Rose was a forbidden MN name. I retract my comment!!! lol

frazzledoldbag34 · 19/09/2008 17:32

frazzled - how strange - I have a Kitty too!
It's a fantastic name.
Mine is shortened from Caitlin, but she hasn't been called Caitlin since she was about a year old. In fact I don't even like Caitlin as a name any more. If I was naming her again I'd just go for Kitty. She's 7 now and most people don't even know about the Caitlin name. She's such a 'Kitty' and it suits her perfectly.
Fab name. Go for it!

frazzledoldbag34 · 19/09/2008 17:35

frazzledfairy I meant to put. Not just frazzled and was also reading the wrong page. It's been a long day.

AnathemaDevice · 19/09/2008 19:51

Our bump is going to be Kitty if it's a girl. Well, she'll be Kathleen, but known as Kitty. It was my granny's name- she was an amazing, strong Irish woman who was the head of a huge family. She was a tough old bird (in the nicest possible way!), so I don't see it as a girly name at all. I do think though that it'll be nice for the baby (if it is a girl) to have the option of a longer name which she can use when she's older. With Kathleen, as well as Kitty she can be Kate, Katie, Kath, Kathie...

botherednanny · 20/09/2008 15:58

love love LOVE kitty
I harbor secret urges to call one of my children kitty noir
but I haven't let this slip to my BF
shhhhh...

Spink · 20/09/2008 18:40

ooh make that secret urge a reality
