One of the names on our list. I really love it but I don't really like Becky If we were to use Rebecca (I don't even know if I'm having a boy or a girl yet) is Becky inevitable?

Nothing wrong with Becky.
Rebecca nice name, underused.

becklespeckle · 17/09/2008 10:40

I'm Rebecca

Was Becky at school
Boo at home

Now Bec or Rebecca

Lovely name!

mummyloveslucy · 17/09/2008 11:17

I'm Rebecca but get called Becky. My Mum still calls me Rebecca when she's angry with me.
I actually prefere Rebecca but I'm so used to Becky. I think if you insist on Rebecca it sounds less friendly.

gingerninja · 17/09/2008 11:46

I don't get why it's less friendly if you like to be called by your proper name.

I would never dream of shortening someones name unless they've introduced themselves to me like that. If I met an Amanda I wouldn't immediately call her Mandy or shorten David to Dave or Richard to Dick etc etc because that is not their name and until you're invited to shorten someones name it seems a bit rude to do so.

mummyloveslucy · 17/09/2008 11:57

I suppose it's because right through school I was seen as being a bit posh and when my mum used to call out "Rebecca" it sounded very posh. I didn't go to a posh school and wanted the children to find me approachable. They called mr Becky streight away, so I didn't want to say "actually, it's Rebecca". You do what you can to fit in.

becaroo · 17/09/2008 11:58

I am called Rebecca but only ever get called that when I am in trouble! Even now at 35!

When I was younger I was called Becca but most people call me bec (my dh calls me becaroo hence my MN nickname).

I was never called Becky which I am pleased about as I dislike it.....It is fine for a young child but not so good when you are an adult IMO....cant imagine being 80 or 90 and being called Becky

mummyloveslucy · 17/09/2008 12:04

There will be plenty of 80 or 90 year olds called Jordan, Ethan, Skylar, shakira, etc. When the time comes it'll seem normal.
I might change back to Rebecca when I'm 80 though.

cheesesarnie · 17/09/2008 12:06

i like rebecca.very pretty

Fimbo · 17/09/2008 12:09

dd's friend is Rebekha. Never ever shortened.

becaroo · 17/09/2008 12:10

Thats true! Lots of Kylies and Charmaines too

Fimbo · 17/09/2008 12:13

Rebekah even!

mummyloveslucy · 17/09/2008 12:15

I also like Becarboo, It's better than Becky-Bonky-boo. That's what my sister used to call me, and still does. The bitch.

gingerninja · 17/09/2008 12:17

becaroo, exactly my feelings on the Becky.

Mummyloveslucy, LOL i'm far from posh and went to a very rough secondary school and never ever felt out of place amoungst my friends who had typically 70' names like Donna or Karen or Tracey or whatever. In fact it's never really occured to me to think of it as out of place or stuck up.

Very few friends ever shortened it and it's not because I'm averse to it, unless it's Becky (however I would be if it was a stranger shortening it to anything). I've never really given it any thought. Even my DH doesn't shorten it and sometimes I wish he would but I guess I'm just Rebecca and that's that!

mummyloveslucy · 17/09/2008 12:26

Everyone at my secondery school shortened their names. If they were concidered cool. There were some very cool names around and Rebecca wasn't one of them. The problem was, it suited me too much.

gingerninja · 17/09/2008 12:29

I thank goodness I was called Rebecca and not some of the things that were uber trendy when I went to school. I can honestly say I don't think my name and whether I liked it or not ever crossed my mind as a teenager. But I was generally quite confident as a teen so maybe that's why.

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 17/09/2008 20:08

Really don't like this name. I know it's just personal taste, and it's a perfectly normal name, but it's kind of harsh-sounding in my opinion. The KUH sound at the end is unattractive.

Rachel is in the same style but much much prettier. And there are fewer of them I think.

FairLadyRantALot · 17/09/2008 20:55

I know a few Rebeccas and non of them have been shortened....and I think it is because the parents/Family just never shorten it, neither does the Rebecca herself, thereofre it doesn't seem to happen!

BexieID · 17/09/2008 23:37

My mum named me Rebecca as she wanted to call me Beckie. I was known as Rebecca to everyone else, until I started work/went to college. I'd love to use it for a daughter myself, but it would be odd and lazy of me.
