Seren is the correct spelling. One question, are you Welsh/ can you pronounce them all?

DorrisMcWhirter · 12/09/2008 19:47

love Eleri and Lowri (although do think of that loud mouthed woman on YV slightly for Lowri!)
Seryn is nice as is Iola bit wouldn't be top of my lists.
Carys - not too sure.
I adore welsh names, Dd1 has a Celtic name too

DorrisMcWhirter · 12/09/2008 19:48

For YV, read TV!!

differentID · 12/09/2008 19:49

I went to school with Eleri, Lowri, Carys and Nerys plus Llinos, Catrin and Gwawr. What do you think of those

ethanchristopher · 12/09/2008 19:49

seryn (seh-rin)
lowri (lorrie)
eleri (elle-air-ee)
iola (eye-oh-la)

cool, I'd never heard of it before that's why I asked.

notsoteenagemum · 12/09/2008 19:53

Carys or Lowri (only if you say LOW-ri as in low down not L-OW-ri as in OW that hurt) think think Eleri, Iola can be harsh. Not sure of Seren would you call a child Star in English. What about Megan or Bronwen.

ethanchristopher · 12/09/2008 19:54

sorry my neice is typing and she has no idea - i have kicked her off now

yes i know how they are spelt and said

i personaly like eleri the best and for middle names was going to go for like a traditional english name as they dh is english?

what do you think of that mix? cause dh says its sounds to "ethnic"

OP posts:
bronze · 12/09/2008 19:54

Now Bronwen is a fabulous name

toodles · 12/09/2008 19:54

Hi,

I am Welsh with a very typical Welsh name.
I've always thought that Seren was spelt with 2 e's. My Welsh dictionary shows 2 e's too but then I Googled it and found that the Seryn spelling is Gaelic. Very nice.

Like all the names except Iola - don't like the Welsh pronunciation of that one.

differentID · 12/09/2008 19:57

You should name your child to reflect your cultural identity- e.g Eleri Faith, or Lowri Elizabeth shouldn't raise eyebrows. Your family has a Welsh and English heritage, so that should be fine

DorrisMcWhirter · 12/09/2008 19:57

Nah! Dd has Celtic 1st name, Incredibly English 2nd name and even a Finnish 3rd name - now there's an ethnic mix! It does sound lovely though and flows nicely

toodles · 12/09/2008 19:57

differentID

nice combinations

bronze · 12/09/2008 19:58

dd has Welsh then English. ds2 had English then Welsh. I never thought anything of it.

ethanchristopher · 12/09/2008 19:58

sorry i relli should think out my opening post before i press send

i want her to have a traditional welsh name because she will be living in wales etc but if we move to england or if she moves when shes older i fear she will spend her whole life saying - no its spelt like this or w/e

do any other welsh people have that problem?

my name is popular in england and wales so i dont have that problem...

OP posts:
differentID · 12/09/2008 20:00

To be honest, I don't have a welsh name but I know a few people who do and none of them have said they had problems with spelling- except for names beginning with Ll, but that was more pronunciation issues than spelling.

bronze · 12/09/2008 20:02

Well mines a well known Welsh name and people still spell it wrong. People get plenty of English names wrong in England too so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
