i like seryn best

my ds has a welsh middle name huw and i think he is quite pleased it only has three letters as he is dyslexi and his first name is quite long

llareggub · 14/09/2008 13:21

My DS also has a welsh middle name - Iestyn, which I love.

spicemonster · 14/09/2008 16:02

Yeah but you could edam and also I reckon so few people know what it means it won't seem odd. My friend's middle name is Sweet - because her parents thought she was so sweet when she was born (they were hippies)

Does your DS's name begin with R? If so, it's my DS's middle name - spelt the welsh way (was my mum's maiden name and her dad changed the spelling when they moved to England so I wanted to put it back again)

I think wels names- are well known now- I happen to live in Wales now but grew up in England. My sister is a Sian- aka Stan, Seye-ann, Shone, Shohna....... she hated it! No probs these days though.

Eleri Sian is nice

Peachy · 14/09/2008 16:14

Oh school- 3 carys / cerys; rhiannon; Alys; Megan, several Carys babies and a few Setens (but limited as lcal nursery called Seren Fach LOL)

BuwchBywiog · 14/09/2008 16:23

Eirlys is actually snowdrop and Eira (also used as a girls name) is snow btw

Both my dc's have welsh names, DS very hard to pronouce even though its only 4 letters. I didn't really realise how hard it is for some to pronounce until after we'd named him.

My fave out of those is Lowri if its prounounced the welsh way

llareggub · 14/09/2008 17:28

I've always loved the name Catrin.

i know a little girl with Eira as a middle name (she was born Jan 2nd)

I do love Welsh names. Anwen was on here not so long ago - love it,.my surname is half Welsh (i.e. DH's bit - my bit is Scottish)

I know a Iola here and DD's name not a million miles away from thjat (although not a strictly Welsh name)

MrsJohnCusack · 15/09/2008 03:31

(So basically I like all your names. but Seren with an -en)

FfreckleFface · 15/09/2008 10:57

We live in England, but we are Welsh - when choosing a name we wanted something that was obviously Welsh, but wouldn't cause too many pronunciation problems, so went for Ffion.

Love Eleri, and Seren is what one of our dogs is called.

Sycamoretree · 15/09/2008 11:09

Only one I don't like is Iola. All others are lovely - but I am Welsh biast...

beanieb · 15/09/2008 13:19

seryn (seh-rin)
lowri (lorrie)
eleri (elle-air-ee)
iola (eye-oh-la)
carys (cah-riss)

totally wrong on three of them BTW

they are pronounced as follows.

Seh-ren
LOW-ree
yol-ah

nuthacuppatea · 15/09/2008 18:51

Love Seren (seryn) Eleri and Iola. All of which were on my original name list. The other two are nice too.How about the names Arwen and Aeronwen? I absolutely love these , Shame my partner doesn't . I'm going to have to start naming the house plants or get some pets just so i can use them, Ha!

Essie3 · 15/09/2008 22:53

I think Eleri Elizabeth is lovely, and works well.
Agree with beanieb on pronunciations. I haven't come across any young Iolas, so to me it's an older person's name, but then you could start a trend!
Seryn isn't a Welsh name or even a noun, I'm afraid; it's not a masculine form. (Although -yn can be masculine, and Bronwyn annoys me too. And don't get me started on Gwyneth!) Seren is a feminine noun and there is no masculine alternative for it; it's just made up, I'm afraid, and in Welsh-speaking Wales that would be a problem with spelling as all native speakers would get it wrong.
Seren has become a really popular girls name in Wales now.

llareggub excellent choice of middle name - it's my DS's first name!

dobbins · 16/09/2008 12:23

I love Eleri

iolaj123 · 07/10/2008 14:41

Hi all,

My name is Iola Jones, and my name is pronounced 'yola'. I'm quite surprised about the posts that people have made, saying that they don't like the name Iola - I can tell you with all honesty that almost everyone (about 99%!!!) whom I have told my name to gushes about what a lovely name I have. Even though I have to spell it out for people all the time, and am constantly being called "eye-ola", it was worth it! I'm very very glad my parents chose such a lovely and unusual name for me. I'm very proud of my name and it makes me extremely proud of my Welsh heritage.

Just thought I'd let you guys know, for anyone who is looking for a great baby name

Cheers!

Iola

ceeceeanne · 28/04/2009 10:27

Iola is only said yola in wales. Its also said eye-o-la from the greek meaning dawn
