Now I love the name Ben, lovely soft manly name but wouldn't have Ben as official name SOOOO, would you go for Benedict (which means blessed, ahhh) or Benjamin?

Benjamin. Benedict is too religious for me (not that I'm against this or anything).

MrsMattie · 28/08/2008 22:40

Benjamin is nice - classic.
Benedict reminds me of a monk and is horrible.

Eddas · 28/08/2008 22:41

I'd just stick with Ben but if you want a longer version Benjamin gets my vote

I prefer Benedict. It is a little more unusual and avoids the nickname Benjie (which reminds me of a dog).

oi · 28/08/2008 22:42

I love the name Ben. Yes Benjamin. Or just call him Ben.

mazzystar · 28/08/2008 22:44

I think Benjamin means "favourite son" iircc [will go off and check], so if you have other dss's maybe not?

reginaphilangy · 28/08/2008 22:45

Just Ben!

But if you must go for the longer name, Benjamin.

pgwithnumber3 · 28/08/2008 22:45

Well I am truly put off Benedict - a minty chocolate monk!

Yes, could just use Ben as a name in its own right. No problem with that.

Have to say, I will change my mind next week...

This name malarkey is a bitch!

Ds1 is Ben, well Benjamin on Birth Certificate but Ben for short

mazzystar · 28/08/2008 22:46

ok technically "son of my right hand"
so maybe its all in the interpretation

dinkymum · 28/08/2008 22:46

Ben or Benjamin

mum2sons · 28/08/2008 22:49

We have a Benjamin, he totally suits Ben, Benjamin, Benji and Benji boo! I love his name even though it is a popular one in his pre school.

3andnomore · 28/08/2008 22:58

I think Ben is definitely a name in it's own right now, and there is no need for a "official" name, imo....I could see a Dr. Ben so and so...or Ben so and so the Primeminister....
actually prefer Ben over Benjamin...Benedict is nicer than Benjamin, imo....but don't dislike Benjamin neither...am I making sense?

pgwithnumber3 · 28/08/2008 23:04

3andnomore, that is exactly how I feel about the name. Love Ben more than Benjamin but there is something about Benedict that I like...

Maybe it is the pregnancy hormones though that makes me think up these official names because when I was pregnant with DD1, we chose Grace then worried that it might get too popular (we were right - although we did have Grace for her name and love it) so said to DH one night "shall we have Gracia as her official name?" - he told me to feck off in a less polite way.

Benedict is a lovely name. very classy.

Benjamin, OTOH, reminds me of a fluffy bunny in a blue jacket.

But it is entirely your own choice of course.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 28/08/2008 23:09

I like both but prefer Benedict. But don't be deterred by the Beatrix Potter associations or by anything else you read on MN!

Niecie · 28/08/2008 23:10

Benedict - I wanted Benedict for DS2 but DH vetoed it as he didn't like Ben very much and was worried that Benedict was a bit poncey.

He was very wrong and has even said that he now regrets it a tiny bit and wishes he had been braver.

Not sure I like Benjamin - probably the Benji thing.

LaVida · 28/08/2008 23:11

Both lovely - but Ben is great as it is. That is absolutely no help at all, is it!

lastboxoftampons · 28/08/2008 23:14

Benjamin.
I know it doesn't matter much here, but Benedict Arnold was a traitor
