with the Baby Names threads?
Just call your baby what you like when it is born ... and then people can get used to calling your baby Tooty Frooty Smith or whatever as it is a done deal ....

But please stop listing names like:

Dante
Hector
Edith (Does anyone remember "'Allo 'Allo")
Blaise
Milton
BAYARD??? WTF?

I can't stand it anymore ....

true sputnik, there was a thread title a while ago that said,

Dyson, Miele, and something else.

I clicked on, very excited about another baby name thread to find it was someone wanting opinions on hoovers. pah.

still love them babyname threads though.

Janni · 26/08/2008 11:38

No! I love the baby name threads - they're a huge source of entertainment and even satisfaction. I'm never going to name another baby of my own, so I kid myself that my input MIGHT actually influence someone else. Or that I might save a child from having a cruel name inflicted upon them by a hormonal madwoman

See how much I love them!

TsarChasm · 26/08/2008 11:45

They should make it the law that you aren't allowed to officially name your baby until it's a year old. Pregnancy hormones should have calmed down by then.

Mind you, I do think Tooty Frooty Smith is a first class name ghosty

ShePeeTeePee · 26/08/2008 11:47

Scottish mummy - there was a knicker choosing thread recently. I've saved it in my watch-list and will be plundering it for ideas later! Chose my babies' names all by myself however - well, in consultation with DH of course.

I wonder if a sociological phenomena is emerging - the baby-forum names. Ten years time and people will just nod, and say ahhh... your mum must have spent too much time on Mumsnet/NetMums/BoobsandBabes etc.. etc.

What's the quintessential mumsnet name?

FabioTheFlouncingCat · 26/08/2008 11:48

3andnomore - call it Fabio

lol sputnik

When you see a name coldly sitting there in active convos, you ca think euch quite easily. But when you are presented with, or just told of, a new baby and its name you're more inclined to go Awwwww.

Unless it is called Vagina Fungulele in which case you'd probably be so shocked you'd drop it.

LuLuBai · 26/08/2008 11:48

I'm with Janni - I love, love, love baby name threads. From the sublime to the ridiculous they are always a great source of entertainment, and just occasionally a great source of inspiration.

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 11:54

ShePeeTeePee - emmmm well now i know.any scanties advice straight to MN. NOT

Weegiemum · 26/08/2008 12:05

I know someone who had a dog called Colin!

He would take him to the park, then yell "Colin" and about 4 old blokes woudl look around.

I think Colin is a great name for a dog!

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 26/08/2008 12:09

Dogs should be called Derek.

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 12:12

oh lol i know a few colin's none of them are canine though

LuLuBai · 26/08/2008 12:15

Excellent. I have known cats called Alan, Steve and Desmond.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 26/08/2008 12:16

PMSL @ Alan, Steve and Desmond. Was that in one household? Can you imagine shouting out the back door, Alaaan, Steeeve, Deeeesmoooond.....

Mamazon · 26/08/2008 12:17

Some of the names i have seen suggested lately make me shudder for the poor child.

i just have visions of some poor little child growing into a strapping rugby player and having the coach shouting something like "flopsum"

or some fat old mare that looks like she was amade up from spare parts of a Mr potatoe factory having to introudce herself as "preshuss" (because names aren't stupid enough if spelt correctly it seem's)

Mamazon · 26/08/2008 12:18

my first ever dog was called george.....it is now my DS' name!

i now have a kitten called gary, thanks to Custy

TsarChasm · 26/08/2008 12:18

Steve for a cat is inspired

Our cat was called Angus. I love names like that for animals.

Fennel · 26/08/2008 12:18

We have just adopted two kittens called (in the refuge) Stevie and Orlando. dd2 renamed Stevie as Timothy but, confusingly, it's a girl. Though we were told it was a boy. Timothy is a terrible name for a girl cat.

periselene · 26/08/2008 12:19

I love these baby name threads with a demented passion.... I am new here though. Perhaps I will find the hundredth Amelia/Emelia quandary tiresome? Time will tell.

PuppyMonkey · 26/08/2008 12:26

Baby Name threads are ace, imho. But cat names seems like a much better idea, reading this. I wanted to call our last cat Simon, but was stopped by DP. Mark would be an excellent name for a cat. Or Ian.

LuLuBai · 26/08/2008 12:26

PMSL @ Timothy the girl cat. Maybe she'll grow into it (chortle chortle).

That is very funny.

Steve, Desmond and Alan have all belonged to different people. Steve was a dude. An enormous tabby Maine Coon who belonged to a neighbour of mine. He weighed 9.5 kilos and had paws like a lion cub. He quite liked a cuddle too.

suedonim · 26/08/2008 13:19

Dd has a dog called Colin. He came already named but it suits him down to the ground. He's the perfect pet, doesn't need feeding, never craps, never barks and doesn't shed hair. Colin I think I may actually prefer him to my children.....

We want to call our next cat Kevin. Or maybe Keith. He'd be a chav-cat, of course.

MrsMattie · 26/08/2008 13:21

I love baby name threads. They're sick and wrong, but hugely fun!

raindropsonroses · 26/08/2008 14:28

People post on forums like this partly to gauge how the name will be received in real life and to check if there are any negative associations they should be aware of.
Some post for suggestions or ideas.
It is far better than asking family I find!

ladyhelen2 · 26/08/2008 14:38

Victorian Squalor my cats called Dave too. Whenever we take him to the vets or the cattery, his name gets commented on. Most love it. I love it. It suits him.

I therefore could not call a baby David. Also for the reason that top of my fantasy shag list is Dave Grohl.
