Which do you like best and why?

Esther, don't know why but i really really like it.
Edith makes me think of grannies with winged glasses

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/08/2008 14:03

Esther. Just do.

Tigerschick · 25/08/2008 14:05

Esther.
I think that Edith is one of those 'old fashioned' names that isn't due for a come back - bit like Vera - whereas Esther is pretty and doesn't seem 'old lady-ish'.

halogen · 25/08/2008 14:29

Just to buck the trend, I like Edith better. I think Edie is a really sweet shortening for a little girl and Edith is very classy. But I like Esther, too.

thirtysomething · 25/08/2008 14:30

both lovely names

HensMum · 25/08/2008 14:32

I prefer Edith too. Edie is a really sweet nickname.
Esther is lovely too.
Both good choices!

Flier · 25/08/2008 14:32

now Edie I DO like. really like.

LazyLinePainterJane · 25/08/2008 14:40

Edith. Edie is nice and I think it is more likely to come back into fashion (but not too much) than Esther.

Jackstini · 25/08/2008 14:41

Neither - sorry. Do like Edie though

AbbeyA · 25/08/2008 14:48

I don't like either, I think marginally Edith is preferable but as someone said it is old fashioned like Vera, Doris,Elsie, Hilda etc and not very pretty.

gardeningwithpolkadots · 25/08/2008 15:40

Yep, we plan to call her Edie for short if we go for Edith

PookiePodgeandTubs · 25/08/2008 15:42

Edith. It's a prettier sound. Esther is nice too, but I just prefer the sound of Edith. I think Edith is more now so there are probably fewer Esthers out there, if that matters. Edith and Edie are nice imo. What can Esther be shortened to? Nothing really.

3andnomore · 25/08/2008 15:46

Esther....but I know a few lovely Esther's...which is possibly why I like the name
Saying that, I know a very stunning and lovely Edith, and the name really suited her....however, this was in Germany and the name is pronounced differently, and I prefer that pronounciation, I suppose

FiveGoMadInDorset · 25/08/2008 15:47

Edith but then I am biased as we have a gerogeous Edith (Edie) blonde curlks and big blue eyes

Alderney · 25/08/2008 16:31

Esther definately.

Never met an Esther who wasn;t a lovely person.

Really not a fan of Edith

MrsMattie · 25/08/2008 16:32

Esther - lovely. Edith - horrid.

Esther.

It's beautiful and it's timeless. It's never been 'popular' enough to date, iyswim.

Hecate · 25/08/2008 17:07

oh and esther can be shortened to

Es
Essie
Tess
Tessa
Tessie

periselene · 25/08/2008 18:06

Hi, Esther is lovely. Hester similar and also lovely. Edith's tricky ... I have the same reservations as PPs. It's a bit grannified, and probably not quite right for a revival. Can't see it doing a Ruby for eg.
On the other hand, if you like it then you use it. Your baby, your choice. Once she's named people will have to be nice about it
Rgds,
Peri

themildmanneredeelsmoker · 25/08/2008 18:08

i don't like either. they are awful.

frazzledoldbag34 · 25/08/2008 18:19

Esther. Definitely.

Edith is just too popular now. And I don't like it anyway.

Hecate · 25/08/2008 18:39

One of them is not awful, TMMJ.

themildmanneredeelsmoker · 25/08/2008 18:45
