I'm thinking about this name, and wanted some general opinions please.

Would you use the nn Dot or Dottie?

Yeees, I think I do

Heated · 21/08/2008 21:13

Adore Dorothea, nn Thea

TigerFeet · 21/08/2008 21:14

My middle name is Dorothy

I hated it, loathed it intensely as a child

At school I got "yellow brick road" and general teasing for having such an old fashioned name - and that was with a middle name

but, all that said,

now, I love the fact that my middle name isn't Claire or Louise like every other 70's girl - and old lady names are very much in fashion these days and I have heard it is making a comeback

So I doubt that your dorothy would get the stick I got

SO go for it

Katisha · 21/08/2008 21:14

very nice name.

mamadiva · 21/08/2008 21:14

Your brave posting on the baby names LOL.

Personally I don't like Dorothy, but I associate with old people IYKWIM and old style names are not my thing but if you like it go for it, it is a pretty name if you like it.

Hadn't thought about nicknames to be honest.

I've always loved the name Dorothy.

FanjolinaJolly · 21/08/2008 21:16

My gran was a Dorothy. She was a very lovely if slightly formidable lady

theinsider · 21/08/2008 21:16

tbh I do quite like it, but it does make me think of "friends of..."

hermykne · 21/08/2008 21:17

kitts please dont, maybe as a second name but not a first, have a friend and shes 37 and her name has always kinda been a behind her back joke even at this stage, shes dreadfully uncomfotable at times with it. plus in the gay world a friend of dorothy is homosexual.

medogsarebarking · 21/08/2008 21:19

Hmmm, not sure - I do like it, but my MIL is Dorothy. She's lovely but I do think of it as an older person's name tbh.

Remotew · 21/08/2008 21:20

Will get shortened to DOT. Sorry, I would not call a baby this name in this day and age, far nicer ones to choose from. Its not grandma cool IMO.

Thomcat · 21/08/2008 21:27

I personally don't like it used in full but think Dottie is quirky and fun. Wouldn't be on my list of names, niot that I'm having any more ever.

I have an Aunty Dot. No-one has ever called her Dorothy.

Heated · 21/08/2008 21:28

Dixie Dot - Anna Ryder Richardson possibly or someone similar.

Hmm-would be lovely where it not for the phrase "A friend of Dorothy"

TwoWindyDays · 22/08/2008 12:41

Love it
It was top of my list of a long long time. Dolly and Thea are good shortenings too

Tortington · 22/08/2008 12:42

if shes going to grow up to be a gay club or a fag hag

its perfect

EyeballsintheSky · 22/08/2008 12:44

Cotton, sorry Have you got any family members called Nick?

Seriously, I need to think about it. At first thought it was a no but it's growing on me...

EffiePerine · 22/08/2008 12:45

Like Dorothea

Tortington · 22/08/2008 12:46

jon bon jovis wife is called dorothea

bitch

Khara · 22/08/2008 13:21

Apparently Dora was a common shortened version of Dorothy in Victorian times. (I know because I'm trying to trace an ancestor known as Dora but apparently not registered as such!) So you could have a Dora the Explorer... Then again perhaps not!

JuneBugJen · 22/08/2008 13:25

'We are not in Kansas anymore Toto.' or 'Thank you for being a friend' (cue music to The Golden Girls).

Not sure I love it. Like Dorothea or Dora though.
