Eve-lyn, Ever-lyn or is it something else? Which one is the most commonly used?

Thanks

I'd automatically say Eve-lyn but would check if I met somone for the first time - don't think that one is necessarily predominant, unless it's regeonal.

squeaver · 18/08/2008 18:10

I know both. I would say that Eve-lyn is posher than Ev-lyn.

my great aunt is eveline, pronounced evah-lin

Evelynsmum · 18/08/2008 19:52

We say EVE-Lyn...not adverse to other pronunciations but not for dd.

OatcakeCravings · 18/08/2008 19:59

I'd say Ev-lin and I'm in Scotland

cazzybabs · 18/08/2008 19:59

if you shorten it to Evie then it has to be Eve-lyn

reginaphilangy · 18/08/2008 20:34

EVE-lyn. Am in N England.

katiepotatie · 18/08/2008 21:38

Also remembered Ev-lin at work, she get Ev for short.

poppyknot · 18/08/2008 21:44

Not nec. cazzybabs. Firend's aunt was Ev-lin shortened to Evie (Scottish)

I think Evelyn Waugh was Eve - lin. So there's the gender thing too!

cazzybabs · 18/08/2008 21:46

..yes but the shortening thing does make more sense if you go fot Eve-lyn

seb1 · 18/08/2008 21:47

Ev-lin and I'm in Scotland

Aefondkiss · 18/08/2008 21:54

Evlin was what I was thinking when I read the title

Aefondkiss · 18/08/2008 21:56

my cousin gets Ev for short

It's Eve-lyn for my daughter, I am from Scotland so maybe that had an influence but that is how it's written.

  • ev-ah-lyn / Eva-lyn - there's no 'a' in the middle
  • Ever-lyn / Ev-er-lyn - there's no 'r' either!
  • Ev-eh-lyn - eh? where did the 'h' come from?

I think it's a beautiful name but she's going to be correcting people for the rest of her life I fear. Hmm

lovemybabyboy · 04/12/2012 12:51

I say Ev-eh-lyn, I am Irish.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/12/2012 13:02

Same as Trinity.

I always thought that when used for a man it is pronounce Ev-lin. Don't know if that's right,I've never met one.

LoveYouForeverMyBaby · 04/12/2012 13:53

I would say ev-er-lyn

MrsBungleBear · 04/12/2012 13:56

I know lots of Evelyn's my mum's age (so mid 50's) in Scotland and they are all pronounced EV LIN

BornInACrossFireHurricane · 04/12/2012 14:01

Hmm, I would probably pronounce it Ev lin but would check.

It could be annoying- everyone spells my name wrong which isn't as big a deal but still drives me insane.

Evelyn is a very pretty name though Smile

GrrrArghZzzzYaayforall8nights · 04/12/2012 14:06

Eh-veh-lin or Ehv-lin (the h isn't an addition, it's to show it's a soft e rather than an ee sound).

tammytoby · 04/12/2012 14:28

I pronounce Evelin as it is written: Eh-veh-lin.

squoosh · 04/12/2012 14:41

I pronounce it Evah-lin. Everyone I know with this name has pronounced it like this.

Don't pick it if you're liable to be irritated by different pronunciations.
