You have tell us what it is now! It's got to be a baaaaaad old lady name if it isn't even starting to come back into fashion.

Thora is not a horrible name. It brings to mind the god named Thor. Just a feminine version.

I have an very unusual first name and it is, I think, an asset. It has made me who I am, I have had to live up to it in some ways. Of course it is a bit of a PIA spelling it and explaining it but I never have a lack of conversation when I first meet someone. It is a real name though, with history and etymology, and I think that that is very important.

Was I right? if so, don't feel so bad about it, I for one don't think it's bad.

I think Thora is a very nice name and it is not even that unusual.

I have two very common 70s names double barrelled together. Usually people just shorten my name or assume my surname is the second part of my name. Also with my Scottish accent it was a complete pain when I lived down South especially over the phone.

And I am not even going to start with all the "jokes" I have endured over the years about having the same name as a well known cake brand.

Cool ruby. It's a nice name, stop fretting hun! I didn't fit in at school either, but for different reasons. At the very least you had the option of using your middle name. Short of changing my whole personality and conscience, I had no option but to be an outsider. And Ethel is too old fashioned!

Not knowing your name, I can't comment on your situation but; DH's Nanny was christened Clipsy with no middle name. She hates it. As soon as she was old enough to have a say in these things she introduced herself as Peggy ... She was quite cross with us for not giving DD a middle name.

By the same token, I also know someone called Elizabeth Anne. She hates Elizabeth and has always been known as Anne ... my point being, it's not only 'unusual' names that can cause upset. You just have to go with a name that you like and hope that the child likes it too.

My Dd is Willow and I sometimes wonder why I/we named her that. Then I think...it's a lovely name and it suits her fine

If it's Thora, I think that's so cool! I don't dislike my name but it's kind of normal and honestly I'd rather be called Thora. I would. I think it's time you reclaimed that fantastic name!

I have now gained an unusual surname via DH, and I suspect I am the only person in the world with my name which is cool
When I google myself, only me comes up
I really appreciate it
And it didn't bother me at school
At least I didn't have to be Charlotte W, Charlotte N or Charlotte W
I also like Thora, although have to confess, i thought you were called Stannah to start off with, which I did think was a bit wierd

My name is from Sierra Leone where I was born. My parents are british and were working there so I'm white which means i have to explain it all the time, or people thought I was irish or scandinavian.
It doesn't really bother me now although when I was younger it made me quite self conscious.
Now the shortened version is quite trendy, although mostly for boys, and it's weird when I hear somebody else called it.
I wouldn't have given my ds a name that nobody has heard of, although his is quite uncommon.
