Mine have Scottish/Gaelic names.

Ledodgy · 11/08/2008 18:01

PMSL I thought Stannah too!

moondog · 11/08/2008 18:01

These threads where people discussnamesbut don't cite them are irritating and pointless.

'My dh's ex MIL has a Jewish name that begins with M and ends with Z. What do you think?'

moondog · 11/08/2008 18:02

Fuckknows. Tell us the bloody name and we may be able to form an opinion.

lou031205 · 11/08/2008 18:09

Moondog, the name is Thora, it was guessed in the 3rd post, and confirmed in the 8th post.

Quattrocento · 11/08/2008 18:09

You know when you said "Think long and hard before you saddle your child with an "unusual" name"?

Did you see the thread by someone who wanted to call their child Bear?

I thought you wanted to call yours Horse, and saddle was a very convoluted pun.

Thora is adamned sight better than bloody Chloe or Ruby or all the namesione hears these days.

SoupDragon · 11/08/2008 18:17

I had a similar situation except I had a pretty first name and a middle name that rhymed with my surname. My parents chose to call me by my middle name (WTF were they thinking of??). Endured 29 years of hell before getting married and changing my surname! I tried changing to my first name but it wasn't me and the damage caused by the rhyming name was already done. I also have the whole pain of travelling etc under a different name to the one I use

moondog · 11/08/2008 18:17

Perfect example.

amitymama · 11/08/2008 20:01

Thora is NOT that unusual, I don't know what the big deal is. When you said old lady name I thought you were going to say Ethel or Gertrude.

I like my unusual name, I'm soooo glad I'm not a Sarah or a Chloe or a Katie or another boring name. So not every kid minds being 'saddled'. Neigh!!

KristinaM · 11/08/2008 20:15

chloe or ruby are lovely names moondog. why are you so grumpy today?

TeaDr1nker · 11/08/2008 20:23

I have an unusual spelling, and i am also unique according to Google, yes i have to tell people how to spell my name but i am now used to it.

i have given DD a not so common name, but there is meaning behind it. It hope she doesn't hate us when she grows up but we gave her more 'normal' middle names, so she can choose if she likes.

Ps, i actually think Thora is a cool name...it doesn't conure up images of old women to me

rowe · 11/08/2008 20:43

my daughter is Genevieve-Erin and im Hannah-Kerrine both one word its great till we rang the tax credits lol took us 5mins to spell

TinkerBellesMum · 11/08/2008 20:49

You'd be surprised when I shout "Tink" or "Tinker Belle" outside how many people actually think it is her name! An indicator of how much time I've spent on here is how much I call her Tink

solidgoldbrass · 11/08/2008 20:57

I do sometimes think that fussing about names is a bit wanky-boden-wearer. If you live in a multi-cultural area there are going to be lots of kids with 'unusual' (to Britsh ears) names that they are often asked how to spell. And no matter what name you give your DC some of them will object to it as they grow up and some will indeed change it (I remember asking for a deed poll for my 14th birthday and being told not to be daft but since I was 18 I have generally been known by a different first name to the one on my passport.) Best solution is always to give two or three first names, at least one of which can be shortened in various ways so the DC can choose which one they want to use. WHen I was young Catherine/Katherine was a very popular name, and in my class at school we had a Cathy, a Cat, a Kate, a Katie and a Kath, all of whom had been known by the short form since they were tiny.

SoupDragon · 11/08/2008 21:15

The OP is "fussing" about names because of her experience. How is that wanky?

AbbeyA · 12/08/2008 13:50

I think that Thora is a lot better than a lot of names suggested on here.
