What do we think of name Tai for DS? Let me explain before too many of these .
DP and I liked Kai, general consensus was that its not super popular, esp with mnetters!!! Anyway went off that and havent found another boys name we really like, dp works with kids which makes it hard. Also we were in Thailand when we found we were expecting and both have a bit of a love affair with country. The middle name will be very traditional English name, as per family tradition, which am hoping will negate the 'but you're not from south east asia' comments and we both have huge families who seem to put me off names easily so I thought I'd run this by strangers and hope to make a decision once and for all. Due in less than 3 weeks and dont even know if it is a boy. Ta.

Eilatan, I've heard teachers say they have preconceptions about first names, but I've never had a teacher say they jump to conclusions if the parents have different surnames. Did you jump into a big blue police box in the 1950s or something?

onebatmother · 07/08/2008 22:51

snigger at edam

rather shocked though. Blimey, really eilatan? what conclusions do you draw?

edam · 07/08/2008 22:53

Thank you, onebat.

Bizarre attitude, isn't it, for the 21st century.

PootleAndThePoseysMum · 07/08/2008 23:01

I really like it which is very strange for me because I normally love traditional English names and loathe trendy/made-uppy names. I really, really dislike Kai, Tyrone, Tyler etc but think Tye for a boy or Tai for a girl is lovely, short and simple for some reason

ilovemydog · 07/08/2008 23:05

love it!

My mother used to go to this meditation retreat and they did Tai Chi. Tai means peace, doesn't it?

seeker · 07/08/2008 23:06

Onebat - haven't seen you for ages - how are you?

onebatmother · 07/08/2008 23:07

but it sounds like someone's idea of an exotic name, though, doesn't it? A bit like Kai does...

DeeRiguer · 07/08/2008 23:18

tai chi loosely translated means ultimate fist..
has martial art origins

tai dai
if you are welsch might appeal?

dont think it works
for me anyhow

ilovemydog · 07/08/2008 23:21

I think it is a great name it prononced Ty, right? i have always thought it was a great name and the fact that it has a special meaning is just wonderful!!!! and that special moment in your lives will last forever, and what a great story. Also is't ok to get opinions just remember you have to live with it and love it. I feel that the name Tai has a good range its cute for a kid great for a teen and for an adult it works for the office or many other work places! GOOD LUCK!

Eilatan · 08/08/2008 12:33

edam I would have agreed with you once but the 'difficult' kids often (obviously not always) don't have two parents at home. I think that families come in all shapes and sizes and I think that the main thing is love at home BUT the reality is...I'm sorry... when you look at the names of kids and parents you can spot the was you're gonna have to work a bit harder with - honest! I was always adamant I wasn't going to get married and would never change my name but when I had a kid I remembered all the time I'd made assumptions (maybe wrong ones) because the kid had different surname from mum or whatever. I know its wrong and isn't how the way should be but there....give me a register of kids I've met with parents' names, no other details, and I'll pick the needy ones.

As for 21st century - does time moving on always mean 'progress'?

gingerninja · 08/08/2008 12:38

Hoe does that work for me then. Am married but have a different surname to daughter?

gingerninja · 08/08/2008 12:38

How, obviously!

MrsTicklemouse · 08/08/2008 12:57

very good point seeker!!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 08/08/2008 13:03

I quite like it - DH has a mate called Thai but actually...that's his nickname...cos he's Thai...
Maybe call him Tyler with Ty for short? I do think that Tai is a kind of pretentious spelling TBH. Kai is awful - the kind of name only a teenegar would give their kid

Dannat · 08/08/2008 13:04

Eilatan, we purposefully picked Natalie for DD because it wasn't very popular at the time she was born! I work with kids so wanted something that I had not heard before, that wasn't made up or ultra trendy. In the four years that we have had her, I have never come across another little Natalie in RL.

Have to say, I think your name is beautiful (can you tell I'm still really chuffed with the choice 4 years later? )

ForeverOptimistic · 08/08/2008 13:06

It is not terrible just not to my taste.

Dannat · 08/08/2008 13:07

As for OP, I knew a Tyler that was shortened to Ty. Don't really like it as a name on it's own though, sorry. But he's your baby and you should call him whatever you're happy with

LuLuBai · 08/08/2008 13:12

I think it's OK. I went to school with a boy called Ty. He was a child model.

singersgirl · 08/08/2008 13:13

The only Tai I know is a woman (short for Taissa, which I think is Ukrainian - she is, at any rate). I do know a Tyger and a Tyler, and I guess they might get called Ty sometimes.

I think of Thai (which he isn't) or 'tie', which is either a neck garment or a verb meaning to knot, to secure.

You could call him Tyler.. Ty for short?

LadyThompson · 08/08/2008 17:46

Not keen on Tai, I'm sorry. I think it sounds girly and a bit naff. But as others have suggested, you could call him Tyrone or Tyler and then you could call him Ty.

Or, if you are set on a Thai name, why not have a look at a list of proper Thai names and pick one of them? There may be some lovely ones.

bootus · 08/08/2008 19:06

Some of these responses have made me chuckle!! TBH I'm not sure we will go for this, but I thank you kindly for your opinions, esp zsos and pootle (never nice thinking you have revolting taste!!!) Just to clarify with the whole name in 'inverted commas' - it IS a name, not made up at all, Vietnamese in origin I believe. Both DP and I are teachers so well aware of all the repercussions and assumptions of a name!!!But does make it tricky to find one you havent met....As for Thailand, its just a very special place we've spent time in and have fond memories of and it so happened the name obviously had connotations. Lets hope for a girl then!!!!
