Scottish Names

I'm trying to think positive atm - had an amnio last week and feeling a bit wobbly just now dwelling on things, so I thought this might take my mind off it for a bit.

We don't know yet if it's a boy or a girl but we want a Scottish name for this baby, but it can't begin or end with 'N' as it won't go with our surname.

We quite like Kyle for a boy but no real ideas for a girl - I have always like Mhairi but it will never be pronounced properly (Vahri) and will be a bugger teaching her to spell!

Any ideas?

Murray is a v good name

hobnob57 · 11/10/2008 20:29

A friend of mine has a wee boy called Strath - not been mentioned yet.

Freya, although strictly Scandinavian, has Scottish links through the Orkneys and Shetland.

Kyles are normally Trouble, you know.

pointygravedogger · 11/10/2008 20:39

dd2 agreed with me on this point this morning.

expatinscotland · 11/10/2008 20:40

now Strath i've never heard. usually you hear it in conjunction with a place name, like Strathtay or that. i think it means 'over'.

pointygravedogger · 11/10/2008 20:41

FangolinaJolly · 11/10/2008 20:44

Haven't read the thread but re Scottish boys names you cannot beat Ross,IMHO.

(I am a bit biased on this one, though)

have you decided yet?
our ds1 is called logan
despite both of us being welsh with a surname of 'gwalchmai' we wanted a scottish name as we got married at luss, loch lomond!!
good luck for when baby is born!!

Scotia · 11/10/2008 22:30

Just seen this back in active convos. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I think we have decided on Kerr for ds2. Unusual but not way out. Everything is going well, 27 weeks now and no complications at all I'm happy to report.

And agree with FanjolinaJolly, Ross is ds1's name

Eilidh is an excellent name

Soprana · 11/10/2008 22:39

I believe it's a Scottish tradition to use the mother's maiden name as a first name for a boy. Hence the abundance of Frasers, Murrays, Kerrs, Rosses etc amongst Scottish boys. It's a nice tradition, I think, and keeps the mother's maiden name alive. That's if she's given it up in the first place....

PuppyMonkey · 11/10/2008 22:39

Esme for a girl.
