Scottish Names

I'm trying to think positive atm - had an amnio last week and feeling a bit wobbly just now dwelling on things, so I thought this might take my mind off it for a bit.

We don't know yet if it's a boy or a girl but we want a Scottish name for this baby, but it can't begin or end with 'N' as it won't go with our surname.

We quite like Kyle for a boy but no real ideas for a girl - I have always like Mhairi but it will never be pronounced properly (Vahri) and will be a bugger teaching her to spell!

Any ideas?

I think Scottish boy names are much nicer than Scottish girl names.

saltire · 06/08/2008 09:34

Ross
Rhuaridh
Elliot
Grant
Scott

Hi Aefondkiss, Moray is what DD would have been had she been a DS. I think it is normally spelt Murray but I would have spelt it Moray as thats where im from too.

nailpolish · 06/08/2008 10:00

James is a scottish name

LadyThompson · 06/08/2008 11:02

Robert is a trad Scottish name. I think Rob or Robbie is quite nice, you don't hear it much nowadays (not in London anyhoo)

eilidhfi · 06/08/2008 13:16

There's a gaelic spelling of Robert, I can't remember what it is but it's got lots of letters a bit like Loindsaidh (Lindsey) but that has nothing to do with anything...

What about Blair?

SheSellsSanctury · 06/08/2008 13:26

I think Blair is lovely too

LadyThompson · 06/08/2008 13:41

Ummmmm...hasn't Blair been a bit discredited recently?

terrier141 · 06/08/2008 22:04

Skye or Lochlan - but Im biased!!

fin54 · 06/08/2008 23:40

Logan for a boy

Finlay for a girl

expatinscotland · 07/08/2008 00:17

Finlay for a girl?

Maybe.

If you're not actually in Scotland.

Ditto Mason.

Maybe okay if you plan on staying in the East or North. But would go over like a lead baloon here in the West of Scotland.

expatinscotland · 07/08/2008 00:21

Gordon is an auld cudger's name .

expatinscotland · 07/08/2008 00:23

How about Coinneach?

We had a wee student from the Western Isles called Oisin.

It's a lovely name, but a rather sad story.

Sidonie · 07/08/2008 00:55

My DS (5yrs) is Alec and I love him and his name dearly. He is not Alexander. However, I am in Australia and I think it is seen as as an old man's name in Scotland. I love Rory/Rhuaridh too.

Knew a Vari, means Mary. Very pretty.

someone has put Erin, this is Irish. The poetic name for Ireland.

seonaid86 · 08/10/2008 17:14

hi, my son is called Eachann, no problem with people saying it, - it means horseman, - it is translated to Hector.

Cameron
Firth
Stuart
Scott
Lachlan
Murdock
Murray
Cailin
Frazier

Just a few that come to mind, its good to have a great scottish name, but not one thats going to be very comman in the playground. hope this helps. s

I was born and brought up in NE Scotland and these were popular boys names:

Euan/Ewan (I have not seen anyone else mention this one)
Stewart
Fraser
Duncan
Hamish
James (is Scottish)
Rory (Scottish verion of Robert)

Moogatron · 09/10/2008 14:50

Oh and the Scottish spelt Iain.

tld · 10/10/2008 09:19

I have a boy, Gregor James. He was born at 26 weeks at 900g.

Now 6: Strong name, personality and constitution!

Hope all still going well.

Slickbird · 11/10/2008 19:55

My DD1 is called Eilidh, she's nearly 8 and we've never really had any probs with it. We live Scotland and I have heard and increasing amount of children called Eilidh over the years. My husband is Welsh and she was born there and NO-ONE could pronounce her name there cos they'd never heard it!

expatinscotland · 11/10/2008 19:56

FIL is Ian.

Only one 'I'.
