Max - a cop-out?

Baby is three days old and badly in need of a name.
Our most recent thinking was Cormac - with nickname of Mack - but thinking it may be just a bit too obscure outside of Ireland (and we have no Ireland connection either).
We thought it could also get continually confused with Max.
I always thought Max was a bit too much of an "easy" choice - a little too trendy or popular or something.
But maybe it is actually a perfect and simple name?
Please advise!!

Is Cormax a name?

shreddies · 24/08/2008 19:20

My DS is 18 months old and I haven't come across any Maxes his age or under, so I don't think it is all that popular at the moment

ForeverOptimistic · 24/08/2008 19:35

Cormac is really nice I would go for your original choice.

We have had a really similar problem. We chose Maxwell to call our son who is now 4 weeks old (and unregistered). We liked it because we wanted to call him Mac but liked the idea of him having a longer name and the option of Max if he wanted to blend into the crowd ever.

Some of my family were very upset when we announced him as Maxwell. All they could think of was Maxwell House coffee and Robert Maxwell. We thought about changing it (even though we'd told everyone when he was born). Other Mac names we weren't keen on except Cormac.

In the end we've decided to stick to our guns. Everyone has such strong and personal opinions about names. We can't keep everyone happy - or if we did they'd have very common boring names.

Before long he'll grow into his name or vice versa and Maxwell will have a new meaning for my family.... I hope.

Just realised our Mac was born on the same day as yours!

mummyclare · 03/09/2008 12:04

Sorry - My Mac was born 3 days after you posted not 3 days before and I need more sleep - I'm sure you understand.

Mummyclare - we finally registered our guy as Maxwell last week. We got that Maxwell House nonsense too but so what - there are a lot worse connotations around other names than a coffee brand. congrats on your little guy and hopefully they won't be in the same class.

Ooh good. I like Mack better than Max I think.

We were planning to have Alec (not Alex) for a second boy, but I think we would have spent a long time doing the "not Alex" thing.

Oops.

Must read all of thread before posting

Sorry!

Have a nephew called Max and hes a real sweetie and right character!

Brightfield · 07/09/2008 01:22

Max is a good strong name. My favourite long version is Maxim. Sooo handsome!

NQWWW · 07/09/2008 18:58

We called ds (now 3) Max, I thought it was relatively uncommon at the time, but it suddenly seems massively popular in SW London at least. Was in the playground last year, there were 4 little boys there and 3 of them were called Max. Ds starts nursery with 49 other kids in a couple of weeks and will be one of 3 Maxes there too. Will be known as Max L (sounds like a brand of CD) for the entirety of his school career. Am gutted.

NQWWW · 07/09/2008 18:58

Do like Cormac on the other hand.

chandellina · 08/09/2008 10:59

i'm worried about that but too late now. we are in SE London.

I am in SE London and there are no Maxes in my sons' school.

chandellina · 08/09/2008 19:06
