Is Thomas just too popular at the mo?

I posted a few days ago asking your views on Rory and Sebastian. I like both but am just not 100% iykwim. I've now got 8 weeks to go and nothing really grabs me as I do want fairly traditional and nothing too modern.

Thomas was my Grandad's name and I would have Thomas Alexander - Tom/Tommy for short.

do you know of lots of them where you live?

There are one or two at DSs school in reception/yr 1 and a friend has a 6mo old baby. I wouldn't say it was too popular round here at all.

and it is a lovely name

AbbeyA · 18/07/2008 13:28

Thomas is lovely, it is a classic name and will never date.

nailpolish · 18/07/2008 13:30

who cares how popular it is?

if you like it go for it

Fimbo · 18/07/2008 13:31

Thomas is nice, I know someone who shortens it to Thom instead of Tom

hw2004 · 18/07/2008 17:12

I do actually really like it so thanks for your feedback. I don't mind it being popular but I just don't want there to be about 5 in his class at school - there again you just never know what's going to popular so hard to predict!!

I have a Thomas and he is lovely.

HumphreyCushioni · 18/07/2008 17:15

Me too, Ledodgy.

Lovingthepink · 18/07/2008 17:16

I have a Thomas who we call Tommy. I don't know any others in his class if that helps.

Ledodgy · 18/07/2008 17:16

Why the I at the end of your name Humph? Have I missed something?

ahundredtimes · 18/07/2008 17:18

I've got one too. And I think there's one on other in his year group.

I think it's just such a good name. I like saying it and writing it. And I like him v. much too.

It will always be popular, because it's a great name.

HumphreyCushioni · 18/07/2008 17:22

I am going through a latin-inspired phase, ledodgy.

(Or I may have deregistered for a while! )

Ledodgy · 18/07/2008 17:22

Indeed.

Ledodgy · 18/07/2008 17:22

LOL Humph.

seeker · 18/07/2008 17:24

Too popular for what?

There's one Thomas in ds's year group of 60 if that helps.

popsycal · 18/07/2008 17:45

Thomas/Tom is a faboulous name. Timeless and never goes out of fashion. DS1 is a Thomas and the only one in his year group - named after his greatgrandd.

Nancy66 · 18/07/2008 17:48

Thomas, Henry, Jack, George, Alfie, Josh, Charlie are all very popular and are always going to be - however they are also all really great names. so if you love Thomas then go with it.

Personally I wouldn't ever pick a ridiculously popular girl's name but i think with boys you can be a bit more relaxed as they just don't care about things like that!

fridayschild · 18/07/2008 18:00

DS (5) has two best friends called Thomas. One is his friend from school, where there is only 1 Thomas in the class. The other is in a different part of London with 2 other Thomas boys, and as a result will only ever write his full name (ie including the surname), and DS1 only calls him his full name. I don't think I would like that myself, but if you are happy with it I do agree it is a nice name.

Lovage · 18/07/2008 19:27

There are 4 Thomases in DS's nursery of 60 children - so 1 in 15 children (and roughly 1 in 7 boys) are called Thomas! But I really like it too and am considering it, but like you, wondering if it's a bit too popular.

bluenosesaint · 18/07/2008 19:29

Actually, come to think of it, I don't know any Thomas' under the age of 9!

Quite surprised really - it is a lovely name

becaroo · 18/07/2008 19:42

My ds is called Thomas and he is the only one in his class and was the only one in his nursery class too - he is 5.

It was very popular about 8/9 years ago but not so much now....although its still in the top 10 (because its such a great name, obviously!)

SJLTM · 18/07/2008 20:06

I have a Thomas / Tom named after his grandad, he is 9 . Only one in his class and I think year group. Go for it, I still love it.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 18/07/2008 22:23

There are lots of Thomases around here too but it's a fine name - and obviously has special meaning for you - so don't be deterred!
