Is it only me who feels guilty for the nasty face I must pull? I don't mean to, but sometimes it's the surprise of their choice. I'm really not a snob, people should call their babies whatever they like and other people should shut up. But sometimes I have a visceral reaction, just can't believe someone in real life has chosen that name.

What do you say, how best to distract from such unexpected dislike?

(Whispers) Met a baby 'Gus' today.

I kept quiet about Urban because I felt a bit dim not knowing of any historical figures with that name that you mentioned.
I have heard it as a 'street' nick name. It would take me a little while to make the leap from adjective to noun, but I think it's a grower

minouminou · 18/07/2008 22:52

it was a name before it was an adjective as we know it, and was a name for someone who came from rome - when rome was the world's only real city - it means, simply, "from the city".
few popes, a chemist, an astronomer/mathematician

Minkychunky · 18/07/2008 23:02

ooh I didn't know that!

minouminou · 18/07/2008 23:05

oh, and the name of a cheeky little bugger who wiped a bogey on me today
he thought it was hilarious

MmeLindt · 18/07/2008 23:07

If you don't like the name then you just smile and say, "how cute"

I did find it rather difficult when a mum at DS's playgroup brought along her new baby Siegfried

I think I said, "Interesting, is it a family name?"

It was, her DH and PIL were both Siegfried.

MM
I like Urban, cool name.

Kazzia · 18/07/2008 23:56

schneebly · 19/07/2008 17:24

ButterflyMcQueen · 19/07/2008 20:24

just told some friends the anticipated name of our 4 day old - a bit of a quiet one - folllowed by ' i like it pronounced...' err no that is not the name

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 20:45

I know twins called Jaimee and Teigan (2 girls) and I had them out a walk one day and a woman asked me there names! When I told her she started laughing and said one sounded like a boy and the other sounded like something from Star Trek!!! If she wasnt old Id have hit her. PMSL.

My DS is called Liam and apparently everyone I knwo thinks it's far too common and Chav?!?

Ineedsomesleep · 19/07/2008 20:55

I love Gus! I only know one and he is ancient, entertaining, intelligent and lovely. Would love Angus as a DS name if DH ever agrees to number 3.

Also can't believe that you can't hide your feelings like that. Perhaps you should think of some stock answer for these situations (or lies) like "oh that lovely, you must be so proud"?

I know one Mum from music group who always insisted on sitting separately from us when we had coffee after the session. Bumped into her just after we had registered Emmeline. She said "is that just Emma that you've added something on?" Can't believe that people can be that rude. Politely explained that the name is very old and just thought, oh well, thats probably why she doesn't get on with other people !

LongLiveGreenElizabeth · 19/07/2008 21:19

Liam is the Irish form of William and is also of course the last four letters of William.

How can a name that is a legitimate form of William be 'chav'. Bloody ignorant.

Donald is Uber fantastic name. So cool it hurts.

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 21:24

I've never understood what a chav name is TBH
does anyone know of any?
I know is a different subject but just wondering do chav names exist?

ScottishMummy · 19/07/2008 21:38

i like liam, i like Gus

Fimbo · 19/07/2008 21:43

I know a new born Ziggy.

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 21:46

Fimbo what did u do/say when you were told the name?

I think I'd have been all 'Oh what an unusual name, how did you come up with that?'

cafebistro · 19/07/2008 21:50

In the course of my ex-job i came across a few names that were shall we say unconventional....
Toffee
Cosmo
Vega
Kream
are just a few..i kid you not.

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 21:52

Heehee I know its not on the subject but funny name story well I think so

When I was born my mum had major problems with a few family memebers.

  1. My name is Stacy and my dads mum took an instant disliking to the name and decided she owuld not refer to me as this she would use my middle name so for the first 6 months if I was out with her she told people my name was my middle name. PSML.
  1. Also when I was born my Great uncle somehow got it into his head that he was told I was a boy. At 2 weeks old my mum took me to visit him and he asked my name and she said Stacy and he started laughing then seemed quite angry and said 'Why the f**k would u call a little boy Daisy thats just bloody askin for trouble'.

I was ina bsolute stitches when I was told these stories what a strange family I have.

Fimbo · 19/07/2008 21:55

YBND - I was told the name by another person. I just said oh to begin with - I quite like it though and it suits the family who are a bit wacky anyway.

I am dying to tell you the sibling names but don't want to be outted - just in case the mother is a mumsnetter.

Fimbo · 19/07/2008 21:57

My friend was to be called Jacqueline - her father went to register the birth and couldn't figure out how to spell it, rather than embarrass himself and ask the registrar he just renamed her Susan. Her mother was livid.

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 21:59

OOH go on...

Personally I think Ziggy is a tad 'unique' anyway cant be many of them around.

Can u imagine what some of the celebrities think of each other LOL?

Is it Frank Zappas kids that r called Moon Unit and Satelitte or sumthin?
