Is it only me who feels guilty for the nasty face I must pull? I don't mean to, but sometimes it's the surprise of their choice. I'm really not a snob, people should call their babies whatever they like and other people should shut up. But sometimes I have a visceral reaction, just can't believe someone in real life has chosen that name.

What do you say, how best to distract from such unexpected dislike?

(Whispers) Met a baby 'Gus' today.

minouminou · 17/07/2008 22:44

his name really is unique in the UK

ButterflyMcQueen · 17/07/2008 22:44

i have !

Rachmumoftwo · 17/07/2008 22:54

Loving Zeff/Zeph btw. Makes me think of Benjamin Zephiniah the poet. Cool name, up there with Marley or Ziggy. I am aware I may stand alone here!

barbamama · 17/07/2008 22:57

come on mm give us a clue

Minkychunky · 17/07/2008 22:58

I met a Leopold last week I was at the time but now I think it rocks

We are not allowed to call him Leo.

LongLiveGreenElizabeth · 18/07/2008 09:39

Hector, Victor, Vincent, Donald, Howard....... I think these names are borderline yuck to the majority of UK population, which is precisely what makes them so appealing to the other 1% of the population.

Amazed that this thread is about Gus. A normal name and has been for 10 yrs. Gus was the new Max about ten yrs ago! Durr! Bruce is the new Gus now, Gus being far too mainstream

LongLiveGreenElizabeth · 18/07/2008 09:41

Minkychunky, was it Léopold? by any chance, nearly two? ish? From a town in Surrey beginning with F?

LadyThompson · 18/07/2008 12:02

I think that, in RL, you have a duty to swallow your horror and say "Oh, how lovely!" You have to FAKE IT, for politeness' sake. It's hurtful for the parents otherwise. No one would dream of saying "Pooh, your curtains SUCK. They remind me of sick" if they were at someone's house. It's the same. You just have a sneaky smirk about it with your DH afterwards or tell everyone on Mumsnet instead. No harm done! I like Gus, the way.

LadyThompson · 18/07/2008 12:03

Come ON Minou. Is it Napoleon?

Vulgar · 18/07/2008 13:07

I know a Nelson.

i kind of like it.

Minkychunky · 18/07/2008 14:01

LLGE

every time i read 'Gus' i get a mental image of the fat mouse in Cinderella

i can control my face when i don't like the name but every now and again one comes along that i'm sure i must have heard wrong as it just sounds like noise.... only when you say 'sorry, i didn't catch that' they repeat the same god awful noise at you and you realise... oh fuck, that's the name

ButterflyMcQueen · 18/07/2008 15:05

someone suggested i call my new baby Miller yesterday

If she had known me she would not have

LongLiveGreenElizabeth · 18/07/2008 18:12

Hmm, does Petit Léopold have two older sisters?

minouminou · 18/07/2008 19:41

no, it's not Napoleon
i remembered last night, that i have actually given DS' name on here before - way back last year when i first joined, so there's no harm in giving it again, i guess
now, prepare your fixed smiles and "Ooooh lovely" comments................
it's Urban.

Twinkie1 · 18/07/2008 19:42

I rather like Gus but did have a raised nostril moment when I met a Spike and a Romeo at the same party!

ButterflyMcQueen · 18/07/2008 19:47

minouminou · 18/07/2008 20:04
