I like it. I have heard it before, didn't realise it was biblical but certainly doesnt sound chavvy to me.

thumbwitch · 09/07/2008 01:16

Rumer Godden's name for the Diddakoi

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 09/07/2008 01:22

The only Keziah I know is beautiful and talented. Her mother got the name from a Katherine Mansfield story.

egypt · 09/07/2008 01:23

sounds very different with 2 different pronunciations

ke zee a (with emphasis on ke)
ke zi ah (much more biblical sounding)

tbh, anything with k and z in together has a chavvy ring to it nowadays, regardless of origin, BUT depends on your social circle as to how it is taken. only you will know about that.

seeker · 09/07/2008 06:14

Whatever you do, don't go for Kizzy. Who wants to be a 40 year old kick-ass business woman called Kizzy. Or a 85 year old trying to be taken seriously and not patronized in a geriatric ward called Kizzy.

You're not just naming a baby you know, you're naming a woman.

Shoshe · 09/07/2008 06:31

Alex Haley's book of his family line from the origional African taken as a slave, featured a Kizzy, the first to be born in the US, into slavery.

BouncingTurtle · 09/07/2008 06:46

Keziah - I like. However would anticipate problems with spelling and pronunciation.
Kizzy - I hate. Sorry it is a bit too wacky for my taste.

lou031205 · 09/07/2008 08:27

I know a wonderful Keziah (3). Her name gets shortened to Kezzy. Not keen on Kizzy.

BellaBear · 09/07/2008 09:21

Aha! Have investigated further and the noun Kezia (in Hebrew) is equivalent to Cassia in English, which is a cinnamon-like spice or the tree from which it comes, so I was very nearly right, and is actually quite a pretty name as well!

Collision · 09/07/2008 10:04

Yes you do need to do the test .......

'This is Kizzy Maynard, News at 10, in the Gulf.'

'Welcome to our new Prime Minister, Kizzy Foster..........'

'this is your captain, Kizzy Griffiths, speaking.....'

seeker · 09/07/2008 10:13

As I said, you are naming a woman....

Ah you see, Hatrick, I think that those girls should have been called Keziah, Isobel, Catherine, Rose or Rosemary and Lucia - then have the -y or -ie form as a nick name. But as you know, I am a dies in the wool traditionalist in this area. (still think you were cheating when you used Thea as an example of a wacky, unusual name though.....!)

FranSanDisco · 09/07/2008 10:24

Kizzy was in the film Roots. She was Chicken George's mother. When I hear Kizzy I remember that film series as I loved it.

Takver · 09/07/2008 10:28

But surely, Collision, it would be
'your captain Keziah Maynard' etc

They don't call him Gordy Brown at PMs question time!

ooh I remember being really really upset by that programme Kizzy - especially the bit where the bullies banged her head against the brick wall. Having said that, I know I young Kezia and she is lovely!

Zazette · 09/07/2008 10:57

I am surprised that it's perceived as chavvy - I know 2, and they are anything but that!

Looking over the thread, it seems to me that the people who fail to recognise the name's Biblical/literary background think it's chavvy, and those who know the background mainly disagree with them. So it probably depends a lot on whether the people around you will register the background or not.

I hope I've put that delicately enough!

piratecat · 09/07/2008 11:01

Rumer Godden, don't belive it, well i do as i was a sucker for stories involving lost kids, kids without homes/ parents. I have only just finished reading Holly and Ivy to dd 6, its a Rumer Godden one. I shoce that book when i was 7.

I was a very serious, ( and depressed!!) kid, too grown up.

I adored Kizzy on tv, and would love love to see it again.

Like the name Kizzy alot.

minniebeast · 09/07/2008 11:06

I think it's lovely, and not at all chavvy.
I think you're supposed to say it " ketzziah"
but you can obviously say it however you want!

Zazette · 09/07/2008 11:11

btw, one of the Keziahs I know pronounces it KAY-zee-ah - not 'correct', it seems, but I think it sounds very nice. I really like it! know a Kizzy too, also cute, but agree that diminutives as stand-alone names are ill-advised.

missblythe · 09/07/2008 11:13

Was my great granny's name (and nearly mine)

And so, I like it.

TwoFir · 09/07/2008 11:43

Love it, its pretty and unusual and a real name

fin42 · 09/07/2008 14:34

It's one of my favourites, and I also like both diminuatives.
