Ridley for a boys name?

Pinkglow · 02/07/2008 10:54

We have a shortlist of boys names now and my DH suggested Ridley for a boys name (he suggested this while looking at the DVD cover of blade runner after the director Ridley Scott)

I quite like it but wondered if it was a bit odd as it tends to be used as a surname rather than a christian name.

What do you guys think - -one to keep or one to drop off the list

please be honest

sitdownpleasegeorge · 02/07/2008 11:04

Newton & Ridley were the brewery who supplied ale to the Rovers in Coronation Street weren't they ?

Well that's what sprang to mind.

It also makes me think of the phrase "riddled with ......"

.... as in "the house was riddled with fleas" or "the boy was riddled with headlice"

It's like a combination of Richard and Rodney.

You want honesty ..... it sounds like a surname used as a christian name and as a fully paid up member of the CAMPAIGN FOR THE USE OF REAL CHRISTIAN NAMES, I obviously loathe it.

there is a peter in ds2's reception class.

hannah001 · 02/07/2008 11:06

Actually I quite like it There is a good book by Russell Hoban called "Riddley Walker" - I think the main character is called Riddley because he is good at telling stories - but I believe it is supposed to mean "reed clearing"

Please don't make me go into my "there are hundreds of really unusual names that are actually proper names - you don't have to make something up or use a surname to be "unique" And a child is utterly unique anyway without being called Davenport or Twinkie" rant!

minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:14

Not struck, myself. But then I really ran the gauntlet with DS' name and prevailed, so if you really like it, go for it.

Umlellala · 02/07/2008 11:28

I like it. But then I am an anti-Seeker and have no issue with unusual names (as long as they aren't unusual just for the SAKE of it).

seeker · 02/07/2008 11:31

ah - but how do you know whether they are unusual for the sake of it?

hattyyellow · 02/07/2008 11:31

Sorry not keen..

nkf · 02/07/2008 11:32

Doesn't it mean wee wee? Jimmy Riddle or something? Or riddle me ree?
Terrible whatever it means.

WigWamBam · 02/07/2008 11:33

Makes me think of Jimmy Riddle = Piddle as well.

Don't like it at all.

Umlellala · 02/07/2008 11:34

And ALL names started somewhere you know...

What is the criteria for a name to be a 'proper' name? Does it have to be in the Bible? Or does it have to be x number of years old? No 'made-up' or mis-spelt names either... hmmm... Is Wendy ok - that was made up by J M Barrie for Peter Pan I think? And what about Paul? Wasn't that made up because he didn't want Saul any more once he renounced the Devil? Oh, and Sara and Abram both had changes in spellings too (to Sarah and Abraham)...

Umlellala · 02/07/2008 11:49

Um.. well, I don't really care whether other people have, but for me, I think it's a bit weird to choose a name ONLY because no-one else would have it...

hannah001 · 02/07/2008 11:49

and - looking it up - it's origins are stated as "old english" but just rare as a first name.

CountessDracula · 02/07/2008 11:50

Sorry it is awful

How about Hedley

Pinkglow · 02/07/2008 12:15

well our other names on the list are

Gabriel
Felix (for a middle name)
Oscar
John
Jacob

so Ridley was only one of them - not top fave or anything and the other names are quite normal

were not chavs honestly

but i do appreiate your comments
