Is this name too “out there”?

Having third baby in March, 2nd girl. First girl is Calla.
Initially we liked Alana (ah-lan-uh)

But I know far too many Alaina’s (all variations: Elena, Alayna, etc), Alana’s, Alina’s (Aleena)… everything is just so similar..

I saw a name yesterday I’ve never heard of.. I’ve heard of “Alora”, but this was “Alara”. I thought it was so pretty. It’s ranked in the top 600s… so I’m assuming it’s “heard of”. But is it too out there?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It’s a nice name, OP. There’s nothing out there about it. You’ll get lots of opinions on here but if you love it, go for it. I think it goes nicely with Calla.

I thought it was Elara.

Definitely Alara with the two I know, as I have seen them written down. Don’t know of any Elaras.

I only know Elaras, but maybe they both exist.

Alara is lovely.

Giraffehaver · 26/10/2026 22:44

Alara is a perfectly fine name, not too out there, not as plodding as the boring Laura and if you annunciate it properly, easy enough to say and hear. I like it

LivingTheDreamish · 27/10/2026 01:29

I've heard of Alara - it's pretty and unusual. Definitely a real name and not too out-there OP.

NuffSaidSam · 27/10/2026 01:58

I don't think it's too 'out there'.

Its got the opposite problem of being too similar to Alana and all the other variations of that you listed in your OP. If you've ruled out Alana because it and similar sounding names are too common I don't think Alara (which sounds almost identical) is the right choice for you!

mathanxiety · 27/10/2026 03:49

I think it's a bit too similar to Calla - both are sort of wispy.

If you like wispy, dreamy names, how about:
Nina
Mara
Alvy
Elsa
Ailsa
Serena
Celeste
Elowen
Winona

Having a name that I have had to spell all my life, my children have easy to spell names. The problem with unusual names is that there is a lifetime ahead of you of people both mishearing and misspelling them. I mean my name has only letters but it is amazing what people can do with four letters.

Sparklinggreen · 27/10/2026 06:22

Alara is really nice!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 27/10/2026 06:41

I know an Elara who is 8. Meh. Sounds made up.

Aliencrispsandolives · 27/10/2026 06:46

Calla and Alara are both quite similar! Shout Alara up the stairs and see if Calla comes.

It’s also not very out there if that’s the aim.

BigWig78 · 27/10/2026 06:52

Too many an and l sounds to go with Calla so for that reason it’s a no from me !

MilkBreadToiletroll · 27/10/2026 07:24

Some more suggestions:
Alba
Lorna
Laurel
Lauren
Aida
Lydia

Alara is a character in the sci-fi series The Orville.
I like it!

Wherehaveallthesatsumasgone · 27/10/2026 10:28

How about Alia / Talia / Tara / Aria?

NamingNoNames · 27/10/2026 11:11

Too similar to Elara, Elora, Elira etc.

I like Alara. Who cares if some dull people think it's 'out there' or if some people who clearly can't spell/hear would think it was Alana?
If you like it, use it.

Don't be a dick

I think the name is dull. Many people aren't that fussed with getting names exactly right. r and n look quite similar. A friend has a Ciara and she gets Clara a lot.

People who pass judgement on other people's children's name choices are the dicks.

@AlwaysExtraHot , the OP asked for opinions.

Yes, and that it's not worth worrying about people who can't handle any names strictly from the straight and narrow, is my opinion.

NamingNoNames · 27/10/2026 14:50

@AlwaysExtraHot , you are annoying. I'm out.

MissL001 · 27/10/2026 18:11

Ive always thought the name "Elara" is super pretty !!

fourcamels · 27/10/2026 18:40

There’s an Alara in 4yo DC2’s class. A lovely, pretty, normal name.

You could also try Elora? Or Eliora.
